I'm trying to make a baby romper with a cotton knit. Unfortunately, I'm having trouble keeping the material from stretching as I sew. It's actually just on the hem of the legs. It says to do a narrow hem. I used a zigzag stitch. The hem stretched so much that the ankle hem looks wavy. I didn't stretch the fabric as I sewed or let it drape or anything. How do I keep this from happening? (fortunately the kneck called for bias tape or I think I would have stretched that too)

There are a few options here, and trial and error (test sewing) will determine which one will work best in your situation.

1.) Try lessening the presser foot pressure

2.) Try a telfon or waliking foot

3.) Stabilize the hem with wash-away wonder tape, water soluable stailizer or even and extra light weight fusible tape (like stitch witchery or steam-a-seam).

avoid wavy hems on knits
