In need, either overseas or back at home (Moderated by Deepika, Sharon1952, Jacqui315)

There's been some chatter over on the Misc. Board about this, and I thought it deserved its own thread.
Regardless of our feelings about military involvement, I think many of us sewists can contribute to their well-being and recovery.
I've been making cool ties for a couple of years -- don't have the link right now for where I send them, it's Hugs from Home, I think -- and there's a Sew Much Comfort (?) that provides adaptive clothing for soldiers recovering in military hospitals. My kit for that is coming soon.
Any one else want to SewAlong with this?

give them a little time. After the Person of the Week story on ABC WOrld News Tonight, my area coordinator had 47 requests for information within 15 minutes!!! Trust me, they *will* respond, it just might take a little time.
Other groups that are sewing for soldiers are Soldiers Angels and Quilts of Valor. I worked with SOldiers Angels for 2 years, but have gotten burnt out on making quilts and tired of QOV getting or taking all the attention....selfish, I know, but I wish people wouldn't go out of their way to attribute credit to one group without researching, especially when there are LOTS of different groups that are working to help our soldiers in whatever way they can.
Sew Much Comfort had modified their sewing instructions, and I just received my new pack. It's not too much different from the original instructions, just includes putting an extension in the seams so that the shirts fit better (not too tight).
The revised instructions could be what is causing the hold up in getting information - they all have to be reprinted, etc.
Larisa, now off to get the children ready for AWANA tonight

Once requested, it took a little over a week for me to receive my packet, and that was before the news blurb. Remember, the folks who run this program are volunteers also and no doubt as busy as the rest of us.
I just finished transferring the pattern they sent me (trousers/shorts) from the paper onto oaktag to make it easier to work with. I do that with any pattern I'm going to use over & over.

I am on temporary break from the latest version of the shirt. I received an email saying that Ginger wanted to ship directly to some of the overseas hospitals, and the need in particular was for shirts that burn patients could wear. This means a shoulder adaptaion (left side) as well as both sides of the torso done with adaptations. I'm getting cross-eyed trying to make sure the velcro lines up right. So far, I have all the bias tape in place, and the shoulder adaptation is finished. To give myself a little break, I have been speed sewing 6.5" squares together which will eventually make up a quilt for one of the children in the family that is leaving our church at the end of the school year. The family includes our Sunday school instructors, a soon-to-be HS graduate, a 3rd grader, and a 1st grader with autism. They are a dear family, so I want to get these done for them.
Now, to bring it back on topic....once I get the adaptations done on the t-shirt, I have some black knit that I was going to use to try to make the pants. The new directions for the pants don't seem that drastic, just reminders to check and recheck the inseam and make adjustments as needed....good thing. It took me nearly 2 days to grasp the new directions for the shirt adjustments!!!
Larisa, currently working on: SMC tshirt, child's signature quilt, quilt for school raffle in May, trying to locate fabrics to make DD some summer clothes, reading and rereading directions for the version of the "duro" dress that I have......sheesh, no wonder I crash out every afternoon and have been able to go to sleep with no strange dreams...I just work until I can't see straight!

I got a kit from Sew Much Comfort this past weekend. There are a lot of "rules" but they are all for a reason and it looks like a relatively easy project.
One really eye-opening fact - Sew Much Comfort distributes ONE THOUSAND articles of clothing to injured servicemen & women PER WEEK.

I received an e-mail with attachments from my regional contact person. It seems to have all the instructions and everything but the pants pattern pieces and labels.
Except for the pants, the other clothing items are adapted RTW. Does anyone know if it is ok to make boxers or shirts from a pattern and adapt as I sew? My contact person was on her way out of town, so I won't be able to contact her for a while.
I would much rather sew something from a high quality fabric than rip apart a flimsy garment from a big box store, which is all that I can afford.

I was a little confused about the shirts and boxers too but it clearly says a number of times that "all articles must be new and have labels." It's some kind of hospital regulation.
So I think the answer for now is "no, don't make them yourself" until you hear from your contact person.
p.s. you can make shorts from the pants pattern (if you had it!)

That is for my coordinator, Paula. I am emailing her to let her know that a friend of mine will be contacting her and has some questions since your contact person had to go out of town. You should be able to ask her just baout anything including for copies of the pants patterns!!
