Will a Cover Stitch machine handle hemming medium weight to heavy weight fleece? Will it make a nicely finished edge on a blanket? What about using fleece as a binding? Will it be too much bulk for a binder to handle? I don't have a Cover Stitch machine but I am considering the Brother model or the Janome 900 if they will handle the fleece.

I coverstitch fleece on my Pfaff Coverlock machine. It handles it fine. I've used medium weight fleece as well as the double fleece with different colours each side. I think the thing to check would be clearance of the foot above the plate.

I know the coverstitch is better than the overlock which sometimes has trouble with the blade getting high enough to cut it all off if I'm using double thicknesses.

I'm sure people with dedicated coverstitch machines like the Brother, Babylock, Bernina and Janome will give you advice on how theirs work.

Re the Janome 900, they've stopped selling that one here in Australia as it only does one coverstitch and really wasn't that popular since it wasn't a whole lot cheaper than the 1000CP which does 3. If you're spending a lot of money, it's probably spending the little extra to get one that does everything.

A CS machine can definitely hem the fleece, but I think using fleece as a binding would be too thick for the binders. But I've never tried it to know for 100% sure.

My Brother handles thick polar fleece very well. It stitches beautifully with no skipped stitches over seams.

Like Debbie I haven't tried but I think polar fleece would be too thick for the binders. However I have bound the edge of polar fleece with other fabrics such as knit fabrics and wovens without any issues. Makes lovely blankets.

A nice edge on a fleece blanket is to fold the hem up about 2 inches and coverstitch close to the raw edge. I had a purchased blanket done that way. I have the CP 900 and it works great.

my Janome 1000Cp handles fleece well too - I agree I think it is too thick for the binders I have - however alot of fleece RTW is bound with lycra or FOE so that would work
