I'm doing the jeans from Kwik-sew, and I don't get the fly instructions... they make little sense to me and it didn't turn out as well as it could have because of that. Can someone recomend their favorite method (preferably one that is connected to pictures, or better yet -- VIDEO!) for jean flys?

That's a great video (and technique) for putting in a pants zipper. I love it 'cause it really keeps the zip out of sight. But, I'm wondering if Lady_Mame is asking about a slightly different thing here. Sometimes to get the "real" jeans look you have to do some pretty heavy topstitching, plus double needle.

I'd still use S Betzina's method for inserting the fly. There is a lot of stress on that particular zipper, and you want it in securely.
If you want all the topstitching that goes with jeans, then very carefully stitch two parallel lines, one decorative following the lines of your functional stitches.
Twin needle topstitching is great for Decorative Topstitching - but not for functional stitching.

I wouldn't use any other method except the SB method. If you can't follow the video, it's also in her Power Sewing book. I keep my fly template in my book as a bookmark to the zipper application instructions. I've made dozens of fly zippers with this method and for some reason I always have to refer back to the instructions or else I get it wrong.

Actually, I got the top-stitching to look great... it was just this darn zipper didn't want to go in all that well using the kwik-sew method (which is similar but not quite SB)

SB's method puts the zipper in quite far. In fact I don't even care if my zipper matches anymore because nobody will ever see it.
