How sewing has changed how I look at things! (Moderated by Deepika, EleanorSews)

Okay, so I've been working on a shirt for my DH. Read through David Coffin's book, read various reviews and am working on the second muslin. We were sitting at home, watching This Old House, and I just started laughing out loud. My DH looked over at me like I was nuts. I realized that I was looking at how one of the guys shirt fit him. And we went to a funeral a few weeks ago, and I found myself looking at the fit of the shirts. And now my DH has started noticing and commenting on his co-workers shirts!

I can completely relate to this. I bought a new t-shirt for my DH recently and when he put it on he commented on how it had drag lines across the shoulders and didn't hang just right. I was just so proud of him!

At least you aren't looking at women's rears!!! Since we took that pants class at ETA Dallas, I analyze the fit of everyone's pants as I walk to work. Hate to say it but most need improvement - mine included!

I can completely relate! The other day I was sitting in O'Hare airport checking out the "smiles" or lack thereof on every woman's pants. (How else can you amuse yourself when your flight is delayed?) I actually saw one woman who was wearing a pair of pants that looked expensive and fit *perfectly*!

If I sewed any slower, I wouldn't be sewing at all.

You are so right....like I wasn't critical enough in the first place! Tell me, are the plaids on Norm's shirts always matched up nice?
LOL with Peggy on the rears. That's me, too.

DH is soooo supportive/interested in anything that I do... He's been--repeatedly known--to approach someone and say, "That's a gingham seersucker shirt you're wearing"!
He also loves analyzing window manequins--"Those vertical lines on her hips make her look fuller", etc.
We BOTH get a kick out of it--he participates in my hobby and I feel "heard"!!
He's a KEEPER!!

Sewing has also made it impossible to shop RTW. I went trying on blouses yesterday and after trying on about 10 blouses, I walked away with nothing. I did find one that would be OK, but knowing that it wasn't perfect kept me from getting it. I would have brought it home, unsewed the sideseams, made the dart larger and then taken a tuck across the back so that the side seams would match shsom. Then I couldn't bring myself to buy a top I had to remake, so I came home with only a pair of jeans. BTW, I really hope that low-rise jeans never go out of style completely. They fit me at my waist perfectly, and since they are meant to fit on the hips, they fit my larger-than-it's-supposed-to-be waist. I did try on some regular rise pants, and the waistband was sitting somewhere closer to my bra than my waist.

I was at a conference and I told another woman she had the best fitting button down blouse I'd ever seen and asked if it was custom made. She was appreciative of the complement and told me it was made by one of the top women's clothiers in London and was her favourite blouse of all time.
That level of quality really shines through (as I wear my $30 H+M blouse with the too sheer for comfort fabric and looong sleeves).

Cheap fabrics, like cheap shoes, are a false economy.

I learned a few years ago that because I'm short and my waist is a a barely discernible dent, that low-rise capris make dandy full-length pants. I'd worn those pants for quite a while before I realized that they were really meant for someone taller and shapelier.
And back to the original topic....airport fit analysis is the best. You're there, you going to be there until they find both an airplane and a pilot in working condition...might as well enjoy it. Buy the latest issue of Lucky to hide behind, and start critiquing.
