Dumb question quite possibly, and, I guess I said it all in my title! I have a ruffler attachment that I found at a thrift store that is for a high-shank machine. I have a lowshank. There are plenty of adaptors out there to make a high-shank machine able to use use low-shank or snap-on feet, but what about the other way round? Is it possible to, um, shorten the shank? or to enable to foot to be screwed in at a higher level than where the screw goes in on my lowshank machine? Have been googling my fingers off but can find nothing.

In therory, it could be done I suppose. You would have to remove the presseer foot shaft and have it drilled and tapped at the higher point, and the excess trimmed off the bottom. As it is possible that this is tempered or hardened steel, it would require specialized tools if that is the case.
In practical application, the answer is no.
There are SO MANY low shank feet available at reasonable costs, why would you even want to do this?

I would not bother with trying to shorten the length of the shank.
Fudging around could cause damage to your machine, not to mention the cost for drilling and tapering and the likelihood of getting it right without any shavings or steel particles falling into the mechanism. If you shorten the shank, then you would have to use an adapter for your other accessories.
Buy the proper attachments for your machine or it may end up in the repair shop or sewing machine heaven.

Thanks for your responses ladies, I don't think I'll take an angle-grinder to my Husky anytime soon
I actually have another ruffler that will fit a low-shank, but it's not as good, so I'll just muddle through with it or buy a better one. I'm a bit of a gadget-freak so I thought if there's a converter out there somewhere I'd get it, but I guess not!

Emily, the obvious solution is that you need to go shopping for a new sewing machine-high shank, that is!

I agree spice girl, it is not a modification that I would suggest.
HOWEVER, if one were to modify the presser foot bar, it would have to be completely removed from the machine in order to do so.

Why you're right, that is a PERFECT excuse to splurge on a new machine- so I can use the foot! Otherwise, it'd just go to waste, right? Hmmmm, while I'm at it, might as well get a machine that embroiders too...
