What to put on my wish list (Moderated by Deepika)
Posted on: 6/26/07 2:49 PM ET
My birthday is coming up and I'll be retiring a few days after that. Yippee - more time to sew! I can think of presents for other folks, but sometimes have trouble coming up with a wishlist for myself (my husband will ask). So I'm wondering, what has been your favorite sewing-related gift?
It doesn't have to be expensive (I have a trusty, very old Viking and a really nice pretty new serger), and my retirement is a gift in itself, but I was curious about what your best gift has been.

My best requested gift was my very large Olfa cutting mat. I was hesitant to spend the $ on myself, but I put it on my list and was given it. I love it!

If my birthday was coming up I'd ask for a dressform, probably the Fabulous Fit. Other things that are less expensive: a set of fasturn tube turners, a gift certificate to a favorite on-line or brick and mortar fabric store, an OTT light, or a set of french curves/pattern drafting tools.
Congratulations on your upcoming birthday and retirement--what a lot to celebrate!
edited to add: sewing machine and/or serger feet/accessories!

Hmmm...birthday gifts...I second the large cutting mat. It really saves times. Perhaps a cutting table to go with a large cutting mat?
Just randomg suggestions, feel free to ignore if you already own...
1) thread snips...these a useful little buggers.
2) Microtip scissors
3) Seam ripper...new ones are sharp...you never eally how dull the old one is until you've got yourself a new one
4) One of those quilting rulers that is 2" wide and like 18" long. Quilter really do have the neatest notions.
5) A set of cheapie sponge-tip painbrushes. Dead useful for applying water *just* where you want it for pressing.
Okay, 'nuff said. Have fun!

I like antique sewing notions and old sewing books.
Maybe you could ask for an Ott light or something else that would be used a lot and that some consider a luxury.

Go browse Nancy's Notions or Clotilde's websites to see what they have that you want/need. Then let DH/family know what it is you want and where they can find it.

Gotta go with a dress form...I adore mine! Also a cutting mat...was there life before rotary cutters? And I love my itty bitty embrodery snips...they are great for trimming threads, notches, and the like.
My newest *need*: some decent storage units. It seems I've joined the ranks of The Stashers.

My birthday is in two weeks. DH is making me a new table for my sewing room. It will be a great present!
My sewing room is tiny and my table has room for only two machines: my overlocker and SM. I also have a coverstitch machine that lives in a cupboard in another room, which means I don't use it as much as I'd like to. This new table will use every bit of space that is available for a table, and it will be big enough for all three machines! DH is also going to add a fold-down flap that I can use only with the door open and fold down when I'm not using it.
It was so thoughtful of him to think of it and I am really looking forward to my new table.

It's a custom-made designer original. I made it myself.

Another idea would be custom labels. OP Gal ordered some not long ago that were really neat. I would love to have some.
