Store bought jeans seam gone awry! (Moderated by EleanorSews)
Posted on: 6/27/07 3:38 PM ET
Hi everyone,
I recently bought a pair of jeans on ebay and after a few wears and a wash, the inside leg seam has gone all funny

It seems like the the second row of stitches is unravellling, as is some of the first row in places and the sergered edge is looking not too good- any ideas of fixing it?
I was wondering about machine stitching over the first row of stitching (so no holes appear in the jeans leg when wearing) and then encasing the serged edges in a hong kong seam type finish?
I'm open to all help or advice, as I love these jeans and have only just bought them!
Thanks lovebugs,
Lauren (currently mourning loss of inner seams!)

If these jeans have the tradition style of finish, the inside seam would be a flat-fell seam with stitching though many layers . If there is no ravelling of the fabric or the serged stitches and just the straight stitches, you may be able to just stitch over as you described.
If the seam is not finished in the traditional method, I think I would remove all the stitching, serge if necessary, then top-stitch.
Since this is the inside seam, don't worry about the needle holes - no one needs to be that close - only you will know!

Not all jeans have flat felled seams on the inner seam. Depends on the particular pair of jeans. I have some with a flat felled seam on the inner seam, and some without -- and some with no flat felled seams on both the inner nd the outer leg seams.
This looks like a serged seam that is coming apart. Your original idea of restitching the seam line (the line of stitching that "shows" on the outside) and encasing or somehow finishing the the seam allowances is probably your best chance of fixing this.
I've re-serged seams like this, but a serger is not required to do the repairs.
