Here's what I look for in a mascara:
No flaking
No smearing
Not waterproof
Not clumpy
Makes lashes noticeably thicker

Jeez, is this too much to ask? I have fairly long lashes but they are fine and pale. I don't put mascara on the bottom lashes, but I seem to still end up with either flakes or black smearing under my eyes. Oh yeah, and I'd really rather not spend more than, say $8 or so, since I replace every 3 mos.

Oh, and, yes, I have read that practically every makeup artist just swears by Maybelline Great Lash, but I think that stuff smears worse than anything. (I don't have super oily skin or anything . .. )

Any suggestions? Thanks!!

Can't promise you it won't smear (anything goes all "raccoon eyes" on me at some point if I'm not careful) but I have been very happy with Ecco Bella brand mascara. It's fairly natural, too, with very few bad chemicals. I have been using it for quite a few years now. Washes off great with the Cetaphil bar soap each night. I buy mine at Wild Oats.

Have you tried the Bare Minerals brand? I haven't yet as I need to save up. I have been thrilled with the rest of their make up though.

Almay One Coat Thickening Mascara has been my choice for over 20 years now.

I love good cosmetics (Sephora is making a bundle off of me), but for mascara I like drugstore brands because like you I like to open a fresh one pretty frequently.

Almay is about the best that I've used and it's inexpensive to boot - $6.99 I think.

Maybelline Great Lash (pink container) gets high ratings and is low in cost. I don't buy the waterproof formula.

Lancome also gets high ratings...I've used in the past and have been happy. (whichever mascara was discontinued and then brought back)...they have different formulas.

Thanks, everyone!
I just HATE trying a new brand and then not liking it. Stores seem reluctant to take back opened makeup (which I understand) but I just don't want to waste money!
Actually, I guess drugstores and ULTA will take it back, but Target and Walley World seem a little tougher.

Hi Stacy,
You can always try out mascara (and any other product) at a cosmetic counter in a department store. (I'm 100% Lancome, all the way.)
I KNOW... Like it and then have to pay $$ for a mascara!!?? Well, if I count the $$ I've spent trying unsatisfactory drugstore brands, it adds up the same.
PLUS buy when there are specials on & you go home with LOTS of freebees!!
At least, treat yourself one day and see...

I have fallen in love with Kiss Me Mascara. It forms tubes around your lashes. I used to get terrible raccoon eyes, no matter which mascara I used. With Kiss Me, I just get really long lashes. It's not waterproof.

Ulta is my current favorite mascara. It doesn't smear very much. Ulta has their own stores.

Sephora is a great place to cosmetic shop if you have a store near you.

Thank you, thank you! I checked out the link to Kiss Me Mascara and noticed they have a medium brown. I've looked and looked for a mascara in a lighter color of brown because as a fair-skinned blonde, I'd like to have eyelashes that are a more believable color. I'll be buying some today.

Stacy1: I've been using L'Oreal Voluminous Volume mascara that I've liked pretty well, except for the dark colors. I think the formula is similar to, if not the same as, Lancome.
