why can't I find my size in the catalogue? (Moderated by Sharon1952)

Can any of you experienced Marfy users please help me? I just got the autumn/winter 07/08 catalogue and it is wonderful BUT I can't find any patterns in the catalogue that say they are available in the size 38 and the free ones don't start that low either. Do the patterns only come in 42, 44 and 48? I checked other threads, but no one mentioned trying to purchase patterns in this size. The catalogue gives body measurements for the size 38 so I would have thought it existed. Vogue Pattern site only offers the 42, 44, and 48 range.
Do they really only come in those limited sizes?

There is someone who posts regularly on SG who complains that she'd like to sew Marfy, but the patterns just don't come small enough. If you start looking, it's interesting how they size their patterns. Only select patterns come any larger than 46 or 48 too, although they list a whole size range in their sizing charts.
They don't grade to all sizes for all styles.

Thanks Marji, I guess I just have a new coffee table book then!! A very, very pretty coffee table book though.
I might try to grade one of the free patterns down to see what happens, though I suspect my skill level isn't quite there yet for that.

Oh, go for it. You'll have a whole new skill after you've done it a few times. You can also adapt details from Marfy to patterns you already have that fit.

Someone complained that they have reduced the number of sizes that they produce and I have noticed that they seem to leave out intermediate sizes.

Nancy, I've noticed so many times that the style that I like they only grade to a 46 - which is not going to fit me ever....I'm taller and bigger than your average European woman.
I've finally come to the conclusion that they decide what styles look most matronly from their line, and then they produce only those in sizes 50 and up.
It is frustrating

Marfy have a reputation for being very fitted so you might not have to grade as much as you think.

Thanks Kathleen, I will keep that in mind. I love really fitted things. I asked a lovely Italian lady at work to give me a rough translation of one of the pages of the catalogue which appears to tell you how much to grade each part down by so now I feel as though I at least know where to start. The lady didn't sew so she had difficulty translating some of the words as she didn't know the english word for it but there are clear diagrams too.
Now I just need to get my existing projects done so I can start on this.

I've only made one Marfy, a shirt, and the first version was huge. I used the smallest size, a 42, which corresponds to a bust circumference of 34 5/8 inches (I measure 33). I graded down and made another version that worked better but it was still roomy.
I don't think the Marfy sizing is the same as other European pattern companies such as Burda or Neude Mode. Be sure to check the Marfy measurement chart (I think Vogue has one) before deciding whether to try one or not.

Hi Yorkshire:
I haven't received the latest catalog for autumn/winter, so I am not sure if it is included in the back of this catalog. However, some of my past catalogs do have basic instructions on how to grade up/down the patterns in Italian. I don't read any Italian, but online dictionaries helped me a lot.
I am a size 38 as well according to Marfy, but i have always purchased size 42 patterns and alter them.
