Okay, is this an idiotic idea? I have a gorgeous high quality men's suiting that a neighbor gave me when his sew-er mom died. I don't wear pencil skirts or straight skirts, and I am not up to the task of making a jacket. So, since I have been hearing a lot about men's suiting fabric in women's wear this fall, I was toying with the idea of using it to make up this skirt, in the wrap skirt view:

...what it describes as a ruffle isn't really very ruffly, more of a wave. And it does call for firm fabrics. And this stuff isn't thick, I would call it a tropical weight wool (unless of course it is silk, I am an ignoramus when it comes to menswear fabrics -- it has a bit of a sheen to it, is very soft and beautiful with a deep, almost jewel tone to the royal blue.)

Since this fabric was free it isn't like I am wasting money. But is it a terrible idea?

I think tropical weight wool would look fabulous in that pattern.

I'm assuming when you lay a single layer of the fabric over your arm, it drapes nicely and you like the way it moves. I think it will be perfect and hip too!

Sounds wonderful. I think the contrast between the sober suiting with the feminine lines of the skirt will be lovely.

(As for the "ruffle", I would call it a "flounce" since it isn't very full.)

We all have a dark side. Looking at my fabric stash, I am forced to admit that my dark side is pink.

Cheap fabrics, like cheap shoes, are a false economy.

Sorry...I had a moment of utter confusion when I read the title of this thread.

Perhaps because last week I was behind a man in a skirt in the grocery store line. It WAS a menswear skirt, knee length. And he was wearing it with dark socks and black oxford-type shoes. He also had long hair--tied back in a ponytail, sideburns, a mustache and soul patch--and WOULD have been worth a second look but this skirt thing...it just was NOT workin' for him at all.

I am going for a level of perfection that is only mine... Most of the pleasure is in getting that last little piece perfect...Inspiration is for amateurs. The rest of us just keep showing up and doing the work.

That's a very interesting skirt pattern. It would be *perfect* in a men's suiting pattern. I hope you do it and post a review.

Regarding men in skirts: My family and lots of my dear friends are Scots, so I see men in "skirts" fairly often. Sometimes it works, sometimes . . . eh. It is always interesting to see, tho. I see it regularly among young men here in Houston. Is it a new trend? I wonder.
