If you get perms, how frequently will your hairdresser give you another one? Does she/he just do a partial perm of the new hair growth or perm over the perm, too?

It's been quite a while since I've had a perm, but when I did actually have hair to perm I got them on an as needed basis. My hair doesn't hold color or perms very easily, so sometimes when they didn't leave the "goop" in as long the perms would only last about 4-5 weeks or so. If it was a good perm, it would last quite a bit longer as in months. The person who did my hair was willing to do them as frequently as I needed them (usually every 6-8 weeks or so) as long as my hair wasn't damaged. They never did a partial perm on me, it was always my entire head.

I have them done every three months these days. (12 weeks really) Seems to do the trick. And yes whole head.
I am reluctant to have them done more frequently as leaching/colouring also damages the hair. That is on the alternate hairdresser appointment. (Visit every 6-7 weeks)

It all depends on short/long your hair is. If your hair is short and you get it cut often, then every three months for a perm is fine. If your hair is medium to long in length, then about every six to eight months is fair. Be careful if you are colouring your hair too. Both chemical treatments cause a lot of stress on the hair. I highly recommend using professional products on your permed hair. By doing so, it will make your perms last twice as long. Trust me, I've had a zillion perms and I used to be a hairstylist many moons ago.

I have lots of very fine hair that won't do a thing without a perm! I normally get a perm every three months with one haircut about midway between perms. My hairstyle is a blow-dry style and I believe that this pulls out the curl of the perm a little sooner than otherwise. My hairdresser won't give me another perm until she has cut off enough of the perm-damaged hair because to do so would result in "crisp" ends and damaged hair. I've been going to the same hairdresser for 35 years and she knows my hair. I let her tell me when something needs to be done. She's the professional and a good one and worth her weight in gold!

I don't get a perm, but my 82 yo DM does. Her hair is rather short and the stylist uses a smaller rod. She recommends that my Mom come in every six weeks to have her hair permed and cut. She gets a full perm again at that time.

My 89 yr old mom gets a perm about every 8 weeks. Her silver hair is wirey in texture and with a cut every 4 weeks or so, the perm is gone by 8 weeks. I wash and set her hair twice a week so she looks nice most of the time.
My hair? Wash and wear cut....
Aside from the hair styling industry considerations, perming frequency is probably a personal thing and would depend on the texture of your hair, how often it gets cut, the length, your body's chemistry as some people have hair that does not hold a perm very long, etc.

At about 40,I was given an ' utlimatum' by my lovely hairdresser. She said that the perms plus permanent colouring regime was starting to affect (mainly dry) my hair ,and that I had to choose one or the other. I chose to keep colouring-and had my hair cut quite short.I don't miss the perm one bit.(And I'm glad she was so honest with me-having shiny hair is important to me.)

When I used to get perms, I would get a partial perm when needed. This was during the 80s when I had a perm for most of the decade! The partials were done on the new growth.

Thanks for all the good info everyone.
My hair is fairly long and in good condition...............two years growth from shoulder length spiral permed hair to begin with. The curl from that permanent is still holding. I'm wanting to wear my hair up, but with tight curl close to the scalp for minimum upkeep. Obviously, hair grows out and I would need to get a new perm about every three months to keep it that way, but my hairdresser refuses to do it that often. I'm too old to wear it pulled back with no softness around my face/scalp. Will be wearing a modified Gibson Girl style. Haven't colored it in two years, either, but will probably do so again with some kind of semi permanent color.
Any other suggestions?
