Hello I have a Kenmore 158.1262180. I have never used a sewing machine so I tried threading it and think I threaded it right but for some reason it wont pull the bobbin thread up to make a stitch. I have no manuals as I got it at a yard sale. Any help would be appreciated.
Here is a picture of how I threaded it:

Pirate,
I can't tell much from the photo. It's pretty dark.
Anyhow, Here is a threading diagram for a similar machine. Maybe this will help.

Thanks that helped a lot:) I still can't figure out how to get the two pieces of thread to come together and form a stitch in the fabric though. I'm sorry if that sounds dense. I'm a real novice.

Is the machine not stitching properly? (I'm not sure I understand...sorry!) To test, try turning the handwheel (on the right of your machine) toward you a couple of times. The needle should move downward thru the fabric and back up. (This is safer than using the presser foot if you're not sure if it's working properly for the first stitch or two.) If it hits something or makes an odd clunking noise, something might need adjusting. Stop there. Never try to force it. If it doesn't you should be safe to slowly press your foot down on the presser foot. Does the machine make stitches on both top and bottom?
I would strongly recommend either buying a good, comprehensive sewing book or borrowing one from the library. This will hopefully save you from pulling your hair out so early in the game.
Look for a book that gives an overview of general sewing knowledge. Some sewing machine basics would be very helpful to you also.
Sewing machines are pretty basic across the board as far as setting them up. They really haven't changed much over the years (at least as far as threading, etc.) Once you get the hang of it, you should be fine.
HTH and happy sewing!!

If I'm understanding where you are stuck: you have put the bobbin in, & threaded the top. Now hold the top thread tail in your left hand, & turn the machine wheel so that the needle goes down & then back up. What this will do is pull the bobbin thread to the top, so that you can grab it & pull it away from you. (This is the very last step described in the link Jenny gave.)
So now you have the bobbin thread coming out of the little hole in the throat plate, & you have the top thread going through the hole in the needle. Your machine can now create stitches.
It is isn't creating stitches after that point, then it probably isn't threaded correctly & you might want to try over from the scratch. (It is also possible that the timing is off, in which case you would have to have a shop look at it.)

With a great wardrobe that's still in the flat-fabric stage.

Thanks everybody for your suggestions so far:) The sewing machine runs flawlessly. I don't have any trouble with jamming or anything; I think the problem is the bobbin. The needle will not pick up the loop of thread. It looks to me to be a non standard type bobbin and I can't find a diagram anywhere on how to thread it. Anybody ever see one like this?

OK, here's how I think you need to load it. First, make sure the bobbin is loaded with the thread going counterclockwise. At approximately 6:00 there is a sm notch. Pull your thread down toward that notch and then to the left and up. That should seat the thread properly. From there, follow the directions Jenny and Anne gave for bringing the thread up thru the faceplate (turning the wheel, etc.).
P.S. - that is referred to as a vertical bobbin, as opposed to a drop-in, FYI.

Hmm That seems to look right. However when I rotate the wheel the thread goes around then catches on this little black peg, wraps around and breaks off. Maybe it needs service?

Your missing essential parts. Again, your photos is a little dark, but it appears that you do not have a bobbin case nor do I see a hook.

I have the bobbin case. There is a picture of it a few posts up. But what do you mean by a hook? I don't think I have anything like that.
Thanks everyone for your help so far!
