I'm wondering if anyone knows of any embroidery/sewing machines that connect direct to your computer with a USB, with no screen on the machine. I'm thinking I'd like to get an embroidery machine this year, and it seems so silly that they all seem to have a screen on them, which I think has to add unnecessary expense. I also think messing about with cards seems unnecessary.
So far I've only found out about the Futuras, but I can't believe that can be the only one- I guess what I'm looking for is something sorta like a 'thread printer' plug'n'play peripheral!

I don't believe you'll find one with no screen at all. But there are definitly options available. You can get the kind that has lots of on-screen editing options that (as my dealer says) truly is a computer or you can get a machine that has a simple black & white screen with very limited options that he says is more like a circuit board. The limited screen machines are considerably cheaper and since I plan to purchase Embird software, I'm with you and decided it wasn't worth paying extra for that feature.
In the Janome line, there is the 200E but the stitch size is limited to 5.5 x 5.5. And BabyLock has the new Emore (which I just bought) that will stitch up to 5 x 7. Both machines connect via USB. The going price for the 200E seems to be about $699 and the Emore seems to go for about $999. And those are the embroidery-only machines that I know of. I couldn't tell from your post if you're looking for embroidery-only or combo machines. Janome doesn't sell a USB ready combo machine with the smaller editing screen. And BabyLock's combo version of the Emore is called the Ellure Plus and I believe that one sells for about $1500.
Hope that helps!

Thank you for sharing that! My Pfaff dealer doesn't carry that machine so I mistakenly assumed Pfaff just didn't MAKE embroidery-only machines. That machine sounds like it might be a good option if the price is right.
For me, I had spent a considerable amount of time on the internet looking at the designs I'd want to stitch out and knew I wouldn't be happy with a maximum 4x4 stitching area so even if my Pfaff dealer had had this one in stock, I still wouldn't have been tempted.

All the designs that come with the 3D software are in the manual which comes with the Pfaff smart 300e embroidery machine too.
I also downloaded the 300e manual from the Pfaff site,it has a bit more detailed info than the printed manual.BTW,the 4 x 4 hoop is large enough for my needs.A combination of very nice looking 3D stitched out designs, the ease of operating the Pfaff smart 300e and the good price of this machine,on sale for $ 399.00 Can.,made it very easy for me to buy this machine instead of one the more expensive Janomes I was thinking of before.

You should make of list of wants and start visiting embroidery machine dealers....for example:
If budget is an issue, it would be first on the list.
Stitching area (at least 5x7 as 4x4 limits you to that size design and smaller).
USB connectivity (some have cable to PC only and some have both cable and flash stick).
Auto trim (a real time saver).

My BabyLock connects USB to the computer. The lowet combo machine Ellure Plus does it, but it has USB Type B. The next step up has the USB Type A (The ones we are all familiar with)

And to explain one step further.....for the Ellue Plus and the Emore, the end of the USB cord that connects to your PC is USB type A and the end that connects to your embroidery machine is USB type B. The only issue that causes is that you can't pull designs from a USB stick. You have to use the cord to connect to your PC.
