I am seized with a great desire to make that gorgeous jacket I saw in the contest area, McCall's M5242. It is fitted with a stand up collar (ruffle) and very chic.

Alas, my eternal nemesis is scaring me again. I am very small through the shoulders and bust, and womanly through the waist and hips (32.5-30-40). So, my top falls in the range of the small size (AA) and everything else is the medium-large size (EE).

Because this item is so fitted, I was thinking I would be better off to buy the smaller size, so it would look good through the upper chest, neck, shoulders, arm length etc. Then alter the pattern through the waist and hips. One more problem, I do have fairly large arms for a woman (I work out but I have a propensity to develop muscles and a bit of "fluff" there, too). I still think I should go for the upper body fit and that it would be easier to increase the waist and hip of the pattern rather than try to decrease the chest of the pattern.

Do you agree?

It really is a beautiful jacket made up. I have looked at that pattern before and was not so taken with it, but made up it is easy to see why you would want to make it for yourself.

My inclination would be to do as you are thinking. Get the top right and grade out for your waist and hips. And, have you seen that JoAnn will be having McCalls on sale for $1.99 Feb 21-23? You could get both pattern sizes to work from for not an extravagant amount of $.

You might be spending some extra muslin sewing time, but it would be worth the effort for the results.
