I was checking out some pictures from an old Simplicity catalog, and I came across these 2 striking garments:
boat neck dress

v-neck dress

As far as I can tell, there are no darts or gathers on those tops. It doesn't look like knit fabric to me, and I didn't think that the bias would stretch enough to do without dart control. Do they just transfer the whole dart to the side seam? Or maybe it has something to do with those freekishly high armholes. Any thoughts?

Just offhand, I think skinny and boobless helps a lot, with probably a lot of clothespins in the back! Frankly, I don't think a real woman could get that smooth fit in a woven without significant dartage.

I'm thinking the boat neck dress might have darts but is photographed from an angle that makes it hard to see the darts.

When I look at the arms they don't look like the kind of armscyes we have nowadays-- it looks like there wasn't shaping for the arm, which is where the extra for the bust comes from, I believe.

Y'all are probably right... I guess its some kind of a fudge. I was hoping that it was some kind of super-secret bias draft that would let you keep the lines straight for the whole garment.

Agreed!

I also think the boatneck dress has a lot of extra room and you'd be seeing some major wrinklage if that model wasn't standing in that position with her arms up and shoulders back.

And let us--or someone--give thanks to the skills of the stylist. I guess.

I guess that they transferred some of the dart control to the neck for the first pic. But you could only do that for a relatively flat busted woman to get away with it, with no other darts in evidence. Which the model is.

I think the magic of clothespins in the back had a **lot** to do with the end result in these photos.

Stylists, geez. Would the world be better off with them or without them?

I was thinking about that... I tried to do that once on a shirt that had too much gathering, and it didn't work for me. Even though I am a C cup, I was trying to only transfer a little bit, but the top was also a v-neck, so that probably also had something to do with it.

I also had the idea that maybe they hid some gathers under that midriff section... maybe it is more of a belt than a sewn-on piece, and so can hide the gathering.

I set up a saved search on Ebay for the pattern number, so if I ever find out I'll let you all know!

Great pictures! Nice challenge, too. I think in the first one they rotated the darts to the top of the sleeve, making it a cap sleeve. The second one I think they rotated it to the V neck. Reminds me of the 60's....
