I'm making a dress for DD and the pattern calls for me to cut two fronts and two backs of my fashion fabric. The fabric DD chose was in the Joanns satin prom collection. It seems a heavy weight fabric. My question is can I use cotton as the underside fabric instead of the fashion fabric? I'm afraid the double layer of satin might be too hot this summer for her to wear it. Or will the cotton not be supportive enough?

I think it kind of depends...

What is the pattern? What kind of cotton were you contemplating? I would think a tightly woven batiste would work. You could also consider silk organza (not poly) - it will provide support while still breathing.

But a lot depends on the style.

Thanks, I wasn't sure if I could even use anything else. But your answer helped me decide to try it afterall and I think it looks okay! The bodice is for a little girls dress so it has a scoop neck and short sleeves. It seems to work.

That's terrific!

The reason I asked about the pattern is because it's getting into prom season, and I wondered if you were sewing a formal. There are several techniques that you can use when sewing formalwear that improve fit and drape, and usually the pattern instructions do not include them.

You can absolutely use a cotton to line the bodice. The only rule(and I use the word "rule" loosely) is to use wovens with wovens and knits with knits. I always line girls bodices with self fabric or something lighter. I line the bodices even when the pattern doesn't call for it. I've learned from experience that kids like their clothes better if the inside is smooth with no seams to irritate them. I recently made a dress for DD who is 11 and it was that poly satin form Joann's and it was so clingy in the skirt that I lined that too.
