I'm working on the Peggy Sager's Jeans pattern this weekend. Just completed my muslin...great fit!! Now a question about topstitching. Her pattern instructs you to sew and topstitch the inseams first. Then stitch the side seams and top stitch down the side from the waist as far as you can (single row top stitching). I have jeans that have top stitching on the side seams instead, and this is where I would prefer it (why waste that pretty top stitching on the inseams is my thought). So my question...is there a reason to do it one way vs. the other?? Or is this just a "design choice"?

Design choice.
And have fun trying to topstitch *both* inseam and outseam! It can be done, but it's not fun.

Thanks Debbie!! I actually went to be last night with my Palmer's "Pants for Everybody" book and found the same answer there. I don't think I'm going to top-stitch the inseam.....just the side seams. Love the jeans you recently reviewed!! Now I'm debating what to use for the top-stitching and what to put on the back pockets, if anything.

Anyone use their Coverstitch machines to do double row top-stitching on denim? Tips??

I just used it on a non knit for the first time. Not on denim but hemmed my dd's cotton twill pants. It worked very nicely. I used a piece of matt board taped to surface for a jig so that I could stay the correct distance away form edge. Not usable for interior top stitching. I also think that you get a little bit too much thread and you can't use topstitching thread or other heavier thread.

I have used my C/S machine on a couple of jeans jackets and a pair of jeans. On the jeans I made sure that I had new needles and used upolstrySpelling argh.. thread for which I had to fiddle with my needle tensions like really tighten it up. On the jeans jackets I just used ordinary thread and it worked fine coped with the bulky seam intersections no problems.

Skye,
Thanks for the specific tips with the denim! I've almost perfected my pattern and plan on playing with the Coverpro this week and getting the top-stitching down.
Nancy,
Great tip on using the matt-board! I also like Debbie's trick on using a pad of post-it's in a similar way. I wonder if my old screw-in seam guide from my old singer would work on my Coverpro?...why don't then make a little screw hole for these on new machines???!!!

I could never get the post it pad to stick in place. I use low tack painters tape to hold it.

I really need to get some painter's tape for my sewing room....there seems to be multiple uses for it.
