Are they really cool to wear? (Moderated by Deepika, Sharon1952)

I'm looking at some Lululemon fabrics to use for atheletic type wear and summer tops. The Dry-flex is 90% Hi-wick microfibre and 10% lycra, and they also have Nylon/lycra. Has anyone sewed these fabrics and are they cool to wear? I live in Mississippi and summers here are HOT, so I need cool fabrics. I thought there had been a discussion about nylon/lycra or Supplex, but I couldn't find it.
Thanks!
Tammy

I think the ability of wicking fabrics to work has a lot to do with humidity levels. Where I live our summers are generally dry and wicking fabrics work well for me.
I cannot imagine wearing them in a place with high humidity, I think I would feel clammy, but I could be wrong.

My brother wears the nylon-lycra from Lululemon for hot yoga so I assume it has to be fairly comfortable in high humidity.
I hemmed some Lululemon pants for a friend and they were fine - no worse than a stable cotton lycra to sew on the cross grain.
I live in the same area as Michelle and this particular brand is extremely, extremely popular. I buy it for gifts and I'm continually impressed with the qualtity of the fabric even though the styles aren't my thing.

Cheap fabrics, like cheap shoes, are a false economy.

Thanks! This info is very helpful. I have some samples of the fabric and it feels really nice. Just wanted to see if it was going to work for me before I take the plunge and order some.

People seem to differ in their ability to wear wicking fabrics in humidity. I tried to wear a PowerDry T-shirt in Hawaii one year and tore it off after 2 minutes because I felt like I was steaming in a bag! But in the relatively dry SF Bay Area it's (I'm) fine. You'll probably just have to try it to see if you like it.
The wicking fabrics I've tried are easy to sew, pretty much like any other fine-gauge knit.

I've played tennis in both types of climates wearing these fabrics....I love em'!! In fact, when I lived in Bangkok (humid tropical weather), I stopped wearing cotton underwear and went to the wicking fabric..much more comfortable. But my mother can't stand the stuff......so I think it is a personal thing, although I will say for "workout clothes", it does dry faster than cotton...much faster.

Where are these fabrics sold? I would be interested in swatches, for research purposes, of course ...

Mary,
I've been finding some on a lot of the fabric websites that sell "active wear knits". If you visit your local stores and snoop shop you'll see lots of them. Target a couple of years ago were making great nylon "t-shirts" that I had in every color, and a lot of lingerie departments will have versions of undergarments made with the stuff. There are different nylons and polyesters used, and they'll have lycra in them in, too. I think some of mine may have been a blend of rayon as well.

Textile Outfitters sells DryLine
Malden Mills' PowerDry
Wazoodle sells ProCool and various other wicking knits
Rose City Textiles has lots of wicking fabrics, but its web site is more than a little challenging to get around. Use the pulldown menu.

My swatches are from Peak Fabrics (peakfabrics.com). You have to call or email them for swatches and ordering since they don't have an online ordering system. Their website is basic and lists the fabrics, colors and prices with a few pictures.
The person I spoke with on the phone (sorry, can't remember her name) was very helpful and knowledgeable about the fabrics and what they have in stock.
It took awhile for the swatches to get to me since Peak is in Calgary AB, Canada.
I'm going to place an order tomorrow, so I'll do a website review after I get the fabric.
