DD is thinking of joining (Moderated by Deepika, EleanorSews)

The young urban types don't want/can't afford cars so DD is thinking of joining zipcar. It looks like a pretty good deal. Much cheaper than renting on a regular basis. Anyone a member?

Not a member (we are foolish enough to keep a car), but have MANY neighbors who are satisfied customers. You see the zip cars all the time around here in Brooklyn.

I am! I am! We have 2 kids and no car in SF. Zipcar doesn't require us to pay for gas or insurance, or a parking place. My husband sold his truck after six months of my using zipcar. It is great. Not good for multi-day reservations though -- if you are going out of town you are still better off renting.

My db in Vancouver belonged to a car co-op and loved it. He could have a car for multi days if he needed it. There was a variety of cars to use and as far as I know he never had any issues.
He only gave it up when he got married and his wife has/needs her own vehicle. She is a Doctor and has to able to get to the hospital quickly at times, waiting for a cab or bus will not do.
There was an article last week about the two different car share groups in Vancouver, but I cannot remember where I read it.

Thanks - DD is in Vancouver and most often bikes or buses but sometimes only a car will do - like taking her SM to get fixed instead of waiting for us to visit and bring it home to fix!

We use zip car. depending on the sort of driving you are doing it can be a good deal. Other times we use regular car rentals.. It tends to be good for shorter runs and more expensive for longer distances and longer amounts of time.. a zipcar is great for say a trip out to IKEA if you are planning on doing a whole lot of buying.
We used it a whole lot when my MIL was in a hospital that was a PITA to get to by subway.

When my nephew took a job in San Francisco last fall, he decided to try zipacr until he was able to buy a car. He is no longer thinking about buying a car. Zipcar meets his needs quite nicely.

Our DS lives in Manhattan and joined zipcar last Fall. He has no complaints and is very satisfied. In fact, he thinks it's great to have access to vehicles in this no-hassle way when the need arises.

It is so handy when 'your car' is sometimes an economy size, sometimes a minivan, sometimes a truck... perhaps the best feature of zipcar is the flexibility.

Wow - I've sent her a link to this thread. Thanks again everyone. If I could get decent bus service where I live, I might use them myself!
