New meds = weight gain (Moderated by Deepika, EleanorSews)
Posted on: 6/13/08 8:15 AM ET
Grrr..I started taking cholesterol medicine and HBP meds about 3 months ago and have 10 pounds to show for it! I haven't changed my eating habits whatsoever. That's an extra clothing size- almost two!
I just started an office job last fall and invested quite a bit of money in new clothing and it is getting very tight!
With gas prices the way they are I don't have much disposable income right now.
I guess I need to join the Y today and start swimming again. Hopefully, that will help some. Stopping the medicine is an option
but not a smart one.
I just want to throw a 2 year old tantrum every morning when I am picking out my wardrobe for the day! I want to jump up and down and scream, "It's not fair!!!"
Thanks for letting me vent. Now I just want to cry.

Oh, I so sorry, I can imagine how frustrating and discouraging that must be.
Did your doctor warn you that weight gain could be a side effect of the medications? If no, maybe you should check with him/her; there could be something else going on.
On a side note, the Y in my area is so expensive, I couldn't possibly manage a membership with gas prices the way they are.

My DH also put on 10 lbs. after starting Crestor. One good thing came out of it. He now gets on the treadmill every morning trying to lose it. He never excercised before. Has been doing this for 1 1/2 years now and has NOT lost the weight - however - he feels so much better and has lost a pants size around the waist.
I, on the other hand, feel your pain big time. I am on meds that surpress my thyroid. Surpressed thyroid = surpressed metabolism = weight gain! I can't lose weight to save my life and save my life is what I am trying to do! Not to mention all the other issues that come with thyroid problems.
That 2 year old tantrum and jumping up and down sounds really good - maybe it will burn a few calories
.
Like Paula, the Y in our area is much too expensive. Maybe you could just hit the streets. A couple miles walk a day in the heat might just do the trick. But stopping the meds is NOT an option. Whatever happened to aging gracefully?
Good luck with this, we are here for you!

I would definitely check with your pharmacist or doctor to see if that is an expected side effect.

I've been on Crestor for about 3 months now and have not noticed any weight gain (I've actually lost 15 lbs since the beginning of the year). It has made a huge difference in my cholesterol levels which makes my doctor (and me) happy. Despite all my attempts to control my cholesterol levels, the meds have been the only thing that works. I was warned about headaches, aches and pains and nausea as possible side effects, but not weight gain.
Check with your doctor about the weight gain -- there may be another reason.
On the thyroid and slower metabolism issue -- I can so relate. I have had to deal with the fact that my metabolism has been slower ever since I had my thyroid removed. I have to make the effort to exercise everyday or else the weight can pack on very quickly. I also lose weight very, very slowly (which is mucho frustrating) but I tend to measure my success in inches lost as opposed to weight lost. When I exercise regularly and I am not on the road for work I will lose a little weight complemented by a larger number of inches.
I can't count the number of times I have cried in my doctor's office because I've worked really hard on exercising and watching my diet and the scale only shows a loss of 2 pounds -- it was a sports trainer that suggested that I keep track of weight and inches instead of obsessing about the scale number.
All that being said I have a lot of weight to lose but I'm approaching it from a small increments perspective -- so far things are going well as long as I stick with "my program".

I truly believe that you are right on with the exercise. I think it is the answer to alot of ills. I just wish I could stay motivated with it.

I feel ya. After starting BC I gained 10 lbs within a couple months and it just kept going up. Thing is, everyone from gyno to the manufacturers to other people were sure it was my fault. I was just eating differently, it COULDN'T be the BC. Right. Got off it and #s that wouldn't budge before are finally coming off. Hm. But it was just frustrating. Frustrating needing new clothes at a busy and expensive time of life, frustrating to not have my normal body, frustrating to have to eat like a rabbit and exercise like crazy just to keep from gaining, and extra frustrating because I wasn't getting support for it, just some blame. So I hear ya, I hear ya!
If you need another exercise option and have either a Playstation2 or Xbox (the later's retailing for about $30 at this point) then I HIGHLY recommend Yourself!Fitness. It's like an exercise video except fully customized for you with different workouts on different days and a personable trainer who's very non-intimidating. NAYY, just a very satisfied customer. Personally I'm one of those people who won't work out if it causes me any trouble at all (I know, I know) so this is great. If you're not like me - Lucky!

KitnRose - Everyone knows that BCPs can make you gain weight. What rock are those people living under? The BCPs were probably more estrogen than you need, so it made you gain weight, and fat holds estrogen, and (I think) even produces more estrogen. That is one reason so many women who have a hysterectomy then are put on HRT tend to gain weight. They don't always need the extra estrogen from HRT.

I KNOW! It was like saying "hey, this half-a-chocolate-cake-a-day thing you have me on is causing me to gain weight" and then getting blamed for the salad I was eating. In very slight explaination, I was on one of the new low-hormone versions that *claims* that just as many women on it experienced weight loss as gain ... but my body missed that memo. It also missed the memo that the low dose was supposed to keep me from going into a serious depressive episode. There's a reason I'm med free at the moment!
Anyway Ronda, hope it helps to hear that you're not the only one who's gone through the frustrations and to know that it's really not your fault! Bodies are odd, sometimes annoying little chemical factories that do the strangest things when new chemicals get added to the mix.
