So I ended up in full more or less 1940's garb this morning. Awesome black and white polka dot dress with gores and godets, red heels with peep toes and full makeup with red lipstick. Pearls - mais oui! We were doing photos to promote some outdoor dances coming up locally. Any time anyone ever thinks to envy a model's job, they just have to think about being happy and "on" at least 20 times in the same pose ("Do the same thing again, I'm just going to change cameras...") in all kinds of weather (even on a sunny, 70 degree day it can be chilly in a breeze in a chiffon dress...) and in less-than-ideal conditions ("Just dance across the street. I'm sure the traffic will stop for you." ) and maybe be happier to not have to do that for a living. Nevertheless it was fun.

The interesting part came later when I did a few errands on my way home. Each store I stopped in I felt, perhaps because such an outfit is pretty uncommon on a Friday morning in suburbia, that I needed to maintain my good posture, smile more and generally behave well enough to keep up with that dress. Each cashier got, instead of my usual, "great, thanks" a big smile and a "thank you VERY much." Not in a phony way, but just a slightly nicer and more gracious (yeah, that's the word) version of me than the jeans and t-shirt version.

We've talked about clothes and attitudes here before, but having this experience from the inside has set my brain to buzzing in a different way than I have considered it before.

And I'll bet there are people going home this evening with a smile on their faces, remembering the fabulous lady they ran across today.
