Hello,
I just bought a Singer Touch and Sew model 638 sewing machine at a garage sale for my mom. My dad is in the process of oiling it for her. The manual has told him in several places to oil this or that and then told him to lubricate elsewhere. Is there a difference between lubricating and oiling or are they two different substances? If different, where do you get the lubricant? I have never heard of using lubricant so it is a new one on me. Any help would be appreciated and thanks so much. Marie

There is a difference between lubricant and oil. The lubricant comes in a tube and in my old T&S the only place that I needed to use the lubricant was under the base of the machine. Singer sells both oil and lubricant...at least they used to.

Thank you Betakin.
My dad didn't want to go ahead until he knew for sure and mom doesn't want to use the machine until it's taken care of. It has sat for awhile. I paid a whopping $12.50 for it!! It works like a charm. I found a manual , some attachments, and bobbins on ebay. She's like a kid with a new toy...:).

What a great price you paid and she loves it..great story. The manual should show how to take off the base cover and where to lubricate under the machine..you need to lay the machine over on it's back to lubricate it under the bottom.
Any oiling points under the top cover of the machine should also be shown in the manual. It has been a very long time since I have had my Singer so sorry that I couldn't help more. Most of my machines since require no oiling but on the machines that I have had in the past usually need oiling where metal works against metal in particular areas.
I think it is so nice that your Mom is thrilled with her machine.

If I remember correctly, the 638 has plastic gears. You shouldn't use lubricant or oil on those gears. I think it will degrade the gears faster. If it hasn't had its plastic gears replaced yet, that might be something you'll have to deal with at some point. Personally, I like T&S machines, but I tend to be in the minority on that. Isn't the 638 the one with the cool automatic buttonhole? I think that's the right model.

Joanns usually has the Singer lubricant and the Singer oil. I see them each time I go there. Good luck!
