Veteran sewing people your advice please...I am connecting the facings to the bodice of my dress. The fabric ravels easily. I have straight stitched the facing to the bodice. Can I serge (cut and overstich) the seam allowance and then understitch the facing? This works in my mind. Of course.....I do not want to mess up a really nice dress. Surely someone knows....

Sounds perfectly doable to me. After all the recent "I sewed the sleeve to the neck opening" stories, I would just double and triple check the facing is where you want to leave it, though!

There is one yes....with caution about connecting things together that do not belong together. Thank you for responding....

You might want to only use a 2 thread stitch to reduce the amount of thread. the other option is just to zig zag the sas then trim at the edge of it. Less thread build up that might show through. Or you could just stitch again and use a pinking shears to reduce the amount of raveling.

Great idea....facings are difficult in silky fabrics....your suggestions sound like they would work. Thank you. You are always so helpful.

I've understitched serged seams in several places on several things and it worked fine. I would be careful (try a test on scrap) if it is a very thin fabric.
