I just found out that there's an interest list forming for an "open studio" style sewing class that would be offered through the San Diego community college district. They're hoping to get 26 potentially interested people on the list.

I don't have exact dates/times for this class yet, but it would likely start in late October and would be held on Saturdays and run from the mid-morning through the mid-afternoon.

If anyone is interested, PM me and I'll send you the email address for the contact person. Thanks!

I'm not even remotely in your area but I think this is a great idea! I bet you'll be able to generate a lot of interest in this concept from the CA people on this board.

I agree--I loved the idea when I first heard it. We don't have anything else like that around here (that I'm aware of).

When I used to live in Chula Vista, I worked for Joann's teaching sewing classes. Then the store closed. And I moved a few years later. I had always wanted to have something like this when I lived there, and had to move across the country to get it... In fact, it was SD Community College who offered me a position (in another field) and I had to turn it down because I was moving.

I'll keep positive thoughts for this being a success; it is much, and I mean MUCH needed.

Hi Michelle.
I'm not sure what you mean by open sewing studio. Could you explain a bit, or direct me to a place online where I can get more information?
Thanks!

The class isn't listed online yet (and from my understanding, probably won't be listed until they get enough names on the interest list to be fairly sure that they'll offer it).

From what I've been told, the format will be an "open" class, meaning that we bring our own projects in to work on, and that the instructor will be available to help us if we need it. However, there won't be any specific "class projects" that we'll all be working on. Does that clarify things?

Yes, got it now. Do you know which campus they are considering?

I think that's still TBD. The instructor (Joan McKenna) has a mailing list for her students (and potential students) though, so I'm hoping to find out soon through that.
