When I was trolling the Internet looking for inspiration for the coat I am making, I found this wonderful site: Luxury-Shops.com. It's a ritzy online consignment shop based out of Zurich. The apparel detail shots are phenomenal! Do a search of "Chanel jackets" and you'll see what I mean. I'll be back to this site again and again.

Lindsay, did you see the jacket with the pockets stacked, and not over the bust? It is an interesting look and I think that it would work for you on your coat. thanks for the great link!

Any thoughts on how to draft this neckline? The hip, not for my hips, but I love the draped neckline.

Based on the back photo, I think the neck is a sewed on band that's been loosely pleated and meets in the backon a boat neckline. Do you have this pattern? The draped collar has the drafting I'm thinking of. It looks like the soft pleats have been tacked periodically to give a held in place look. Depending on the material (so let's say a soft sweater knit), I would start with a long rectangle 4 to 6 times the finished width and length to equal the boat neckline plus closure requirements. Fold it in half width wise, sew short ends closed (with loops in the seam for closure). Turn and start playing with the pleating and periodic tacking to reduce the width to what is desired. Then could sew on the raw edges to the bodice neckline. You have me wanting to play around with a knit tonight. Maybe start with this top for the neckline. Since it's getting cold, I wouldn't want a wider boat neck.

ETA:
I'm modifying the initial rectangle idea ... to make it lay flat, there needs to be a difference in the inner diameter length (closest to the neck) and the outer diameter length (attached to the bodice). So intead of the rectangle, maye in oval (cut on fold) with the appropriate dimensions of width and length. You would not be able to fold it in half width wise, so the oval need only be 2-3 times the width, cut twice and sewed closed on the inner diameter/neck edge.

Nancy,
I love that top with the neckline. What a wonderful detail. I don't care who the designer is, belly showing is definitely out---thus sayeth Tim Gunn!

I also agree with the you that the waist with all those horizontal lines could make a garter snake look wide and would not work for most hips!

The neckline??? The fabric looks like a knit and they may have layered in and used a lettuce leaf stitch either on a machine or the serger. I wish I could get a closer look bc that is really a nice detail.

BTW--I don't think the pants will work for you either Nancy---just not sophisticated enough for your quality of NY woman!
