I just made some high-waist, bellbottom jeans from a vintage pattern- no, they look GOOD!- and they have a straight, one piece waistband. They're sooooper tight- NO! I said they DO look good!- and the waistband is tight but still contrives to give me gaposis at the centre back.
I might make another pair after these. I was thinking of shaping the waistband slightly but.... I don't know that might look a little funny, I mean its right at the waist so it should be flat, really, I would think...
Anyone got any ideas? TIA.

Try steaming the @#$% out of the CB area of the waistband before you apply it. Stretch the lower edge and steam it until the back waistband forms a nice curve. It's subtle, but it helps it hug the hollow of your back. Ease-stitching the edge of the pants and stabilizing that edge before you apply the waistband doesn't hurt either.

If you make them again, there is nothing that says you can't add a cb seam in the waistband.

I saw a really cool pair of intage jeans that had a keyhole back and a cinch strap-- looked great :)

I hope someone can give you the simple answer to this. So many of us have back waistband gaposis. Many have suggested making a center seam in the band. I still can't figure out how that is suppose to get rid of the gap. I just can't get it to work. So my solution is to wear an over blouse or add belt loops and wear a belt.

One thing I do to purchased jeans is to put some elastic in the back waistband. Today's Marcy Tilton newsletter has Nandini Tilton's jeans alteration explained very clearly and this is pretty much what I do. It doesn't look elastic-y and gather-y when worn, just when off the body.
Now, if I were sewing jeans, I'd want that gap to disappear in the construction phase. My Tahari jeans have a waistband that is both shaped AND on the bias and it conforms to my, ahem, womanly shape better than many straight bands. It's interfaced so it won't keep on growing. Just an idea to add to your list.

Thankyou for all your suggestions ladies. I reckon between steaming, elasticating and cb seaming, I should be able to fix this thing!
I honestly had thought I wouldn't be dealing with this *at all* because of the position of the high waistband... I've made other jeans that sit below my waistline- hip-hugger style- and THEY had shaped bands but had gaposis. *shrug*

Lady_Mame, I'm intrigued by this- could you describe it in more detail? I have never heard of a keyhole back and am trying to imagine what that would look like! I've been googling it and only getting results for tops. I really like quirky little details so maybe its something I could try!
