So... last week I wore a pair of RTW pants that I've worn a fair number of times, but not recently. I haven't changed that much in size, so I don't think it was me, but wow -- the fit is kind of awful... crotch too low, etc. But I never noticed this before! I haven't even sewn much for myself yet since I started back to sewing a year or so ago, but still, I'm suddenly aware of fit much more than before. Has anyone else had this revelation after sewing for a while?

Yes! And doesn't it kill ya? I put on a pair of really nice Ralph Lauren RTW wool pants yesterday and took one look at them and took them off! The fit was horrible and I too haven't changed much over the last year. Sometimes I think ignorance is bliss

The more you sew the more you are aware of good fit and the less you are will to accept poor fit, especially at rtw prices!

I've also heard others say that they haven't gained or lost weight but the same brands or sizes no longer fit. I think our bodies change (due to gravity, menopause, etc.). Learning what a good fit is has a positive side, but sometimes ignorance *is* bliss.

Wait until you notice everyone else around you and how badly their clothes fit. I just want to go up to perfect strangers and say, "You know, if you just take off the sleeve and shorten the shoulder seam before sewing the sleeve back on, you could look really great in that shirt." or something to that effect.

This is the same pair of pants I wore last fall-winter at virtually exactly the same weight and dimensions, and I'm sure I didn't have a significantly different crotch measurement then. The main difference seems to be that I now pay more attention to fit. Good, bad? -- both! As I pay more attention to fit I'll obviously choose clothes that fit better, BUT much of my already minimal wardrobe is probably going to start looking sad to me. I guess for those who can replace all their bad-fitting items there would be no downside to this. I can't, so I'm slightly annoyed, but I know that in the long run my new "fit eyes" will be beneficial to me.

Once you learn how to sew attractive clothes that fit, you will never be satisfied with off the rack ready to wear.

I'm going to resist doing this, even when my "fit eye" is as good as yours. With my luck, I'd say this to some lady who had just had a confrontation with her ex-husband's new girlfriend and was out for blood.

I almost did that very thing last week at dinner. Good thing I hadn't had too much liquid courage
