Is there such a thing? (Moderated by Deepika, EleanorSews)

My DH gave me a very fancy set of Calphalon knives for Xmas. I was thrilled and threw out my ratty collection of old beat knives. I stopped being thrilled when I pulled out my 6" utility knife from the washing machine and it was covered with rust spots. The salesman had assured my husband that these were indeed dishwasher safe. Phffffft.
Now I have been looking for something better, knives which are good quality but you can wash them in the dishwasher. I can't seem to find any. Am I just looking in the wrong place.
I hate being a slave to my tools and, yes, I do not want to have to spend "a few extra seconds" merrily hand washing and lovingly drying some inanimate object. If you add up the amount of time you have to fiddle with everything in your life which "only takes a few seconds" you will know that that few seconds starts eating into your time pretty hard. So, any relief out there? Thanks.

We got this set at Costco, and it also claims to be dishwasher safe: Henckel's knife set, but we don't put them in the dishwasher.
When we were shopping for knives a few months ago, my husband insisted that they should be able to go in the dishwasher. It seems one of the major determinants of whether a knife is rated "dishwasher safe" is the type of handle and how it is attached. The ones with fancy rubberized handles can't go in the dishwasher, while the more plain handles sometimes can. It seems a lot of Henckels knives claim to be dishwasher safe, and if you peruse the Amazon reviews some people are saying they actually put them in the dishwasher without problems. I would look closely at those reviews and choose based on that.
To be honest, though, I have never put good knives in the dishwasher - we have some cheap-o serrated steak knives that go in the dishwasher all the time, but I wouldn't put a nice chef's knife or sharp paring knife in the dishwasher. They really clean up quickly if you rinse them immediately after using and don't take much extra time when we are already washing pots and pans. (Putting pots and pans in the dishwasher has been another standing argument in our house...!) I have read several places that the dishwasher will dull the blades quickly (not sure if it's the heat or the detergent or both), and I really don't want to be sharpening my knives all the time. At some point my husband came around, and we do hand wash the knives now.

I have these cheapo Henckels paring knives that I merrily toss in the dishwasher. I have three sets of them, they get put in lunches and chucked in the cooler and generally used a lot. For 10 bucks if they wear out faster in the dishwasher, who cares? We also have some cheapy plastic-handled steak knives that get put in the dishwasher.
But my $80 Wusthof santoku gets merrily washed and lovingly hand dried
If those Calphalon knives were labeled dishwasher safe and didn't survive the dishwasher, I would return them. Even if it's months later.

I put my Henckels in the dishwasher always. Mine are a pretty high end grade, though not top of the line. I told my DH that I didn't want anything in my house that couldn't be washed by a machine. I'm still trying to get the dog in Magtag.

I have those paring knives too and they've gone in the dishwasher daily for a couple of years. Same for this one, with a rubberized handle

I bought 2 similar sets at Target -- same as your link with an additional red handled serrated knife. These are great workhorse items in my kitchen, but for some reason they keep running away -- so far I have lost one red, both green and one yellow knife. Could they have turned up at your house?
I also believe that everything in the house should be washed by machine - so I toss everything in the dishwasher that will fit, including my full set of 20+ year old Chicago Cutlery (wood handle) knives. I keep a Heinkels sharpener handy and run the knives over it pretty regularly, the big knives get professionally sharpened (at Joann's) every three years or so.

I wouldn't put good knives in the dishwasher. I too have cheapo steak knives and I don't really like to put those in the dishwasher because I'm always afraid of being cut (although they're so cheap I'm not sure that's possible).
From what I've read about why knives get sharp, and what honing and sharpening do, I don't think a knife could really get dull in the dishwasher. A knife dulls when the metal at the very edge bends, which it does from contact with food and your cutting surface. If the knife is in the dishwasher, I don't see how it could be making contact with something that could bend the edge. However, if your dishwasher squirts water that forcefully, I bet your dishes get really clean!

LOL I haven't seen them but I'll check DH's tackle box. That's usually the first place I look when the paring knives or the scissors disappear

I put sharp knives in the cutlery holder point down and have always done so. They come out clean and no one is going to get an ugly surprise.

I never ever put my knives in the dishwasher. I have mostly 4 star Henckels some of which are 35 years old. Putting them in the dishwasher dulls knives and good, easy to sharpen knives are not stainless, but a high carbon steel.
