I have just finished two baby quilts. I am going to give them to my granddaughter who is going to have her first baby in April. I want to tell her how to care for the quilts. I am not sure if it is a good idea to iron quilts after they are washed. What do you think? good idea or bad?

I think it strictly personal preferance. As far as baby quilts go I wouldn't tell her to iron them after every wash. With a baby she has enough to do lol.

Well I hope so, I just ironed my finished wall hanging!
. I also iron the cotton batting before layering the backing and top, I've found I don't get wrinkles this way. You should be fine.

I can't imagine you would hurt the quilt by doing this, but I have to ask why on earth you would want to???

Edited to add, okay I can see ironing a wall hanging, but I would be looking to make the quilt on an infant as cuddly as possible, not stiffen it.

Once the quilts are broken in with a few washings they won't need ironing. They will be so soft and cuddly.

Thanks everyone. I think that you are right, all of you. It probably won't hurt to iron the quilt, but it is very likely that it won't happen. She is already feeling overwhelmed with all her thoughts and concerns regarding looking after her first baby. I don't think she will be too concerned about a few wrinkles in the quilts.

It is ok to iron a quilt if everything is 100% cotton. No one should use a hot iron, however, if the batt is polyester because it could melt.

If the quilt will actually be used by the baby, no she won't be worried about wrinkles, at least for very long. LOL It will have baby-spit and "leaked diaper contents" on it before long anyway. I make my quilts to be used, unless I specify one is a "wall hanging."

Doris, you are so right. I like to put this poem on the back of a baby quilt, as part of the label, to emphasize I expect it to be used and not 'saved'. It's by Nancy Riddell and was in the QNM issue # 279/ Jan-Feb 1996.
It's Your Quilt
It's OK if you sit on your quilt.
It's OK if your bottle gets spilt.
If you swallow some air
and you burp, don't despair;
It's OK if you spit on your quilt.
There are scraps old and new on your quilt.
Put together for you on your quilt.
If your gums feel numb
'Cause your teeth haven't come,
it's OK if you chew on your quilt.
We expect you to lie on your quilt.
If you hurt, you may cry on your quilt.
On a cold rainy night,
Don't you fret; you're all right.
You'll be snug, warm and dry on your quilt.

I don't know if this is a decorative keepsake quilt or a "to be used" quilt. Ironing is personal preference, but most new moms would avoid the extra work on a quilt that is washed often. On the other hand, if it is decorative, care suggestions would help.
A story - My sil gave my son a knitted baby blanket with a note to me that I needed to have it "blocked". Well, I did not knit and did not know what that meant, and definitely did not have time or money to find a knitting shop to have it done, so it went on a closet shelf and never used.
I love making baby "drag around" quilts and that poem sounds perfect. I always have to tell the moms and dads that I would not have my feelings hurt to see the quilt on the floor, in the yard -- please use it.
