Hello everyone,
I am a novice sewer. I wear a size 16 top, but a smaller bottom. Are there any patterns you would recommend for my body type? I have looked at the "petite plus" brand of sewing patterns. They dont look young and stylish to me when photographed, finished, on a model. I am very excited because i'll be in New York in mid May. I would like to take the opportunity to stock up while there. My sister lives there , and I will be visiting for the birth of her grandchild. I live in Vancouver, B.C. (host city of the 2010 Winter Olympics.) Nice to meet you all and thanks for reading this post! dawnhopeful

Hello to everyone,
I am a novice sewer and would like to know what patterns you recommend for a woman who is size 16 on the top, but smaller on the bottom. I have seen the "petite Plus' brand on the net, but find the clothing frumpy looking on the photographed models. I am very excited to be going to New York in mid May. I would like to stock up while I have the opportunity! My sister lives there, and I will be coming for the birth of her grandchild! I live in Vancouver, B.C. (home of the 2010 Winter Olympics) and am very pleased to meet you! Thanks for reading this post. dawnhopeful

You mean you wear 16 in ready-to-wear (RTW), right? (Size 16 in patterns is nowhere near "plus" -- it's roughly retail size 12.) For style and fit, I highly recommend Burda.* However, since you're brand new to sewing, I should add the caveat that Burda's wording in their instructions is often weird and confusing... you get used to it after a while, but you might want to try some Kwik Sew and other non-European patterns until you get the hang of a few things.
You probably don't need to venture into patterns that are for plus only, by the way.
(*Note: Burda writes "plus" on EVERY envelope pattern that goes up to at least size 20/46 [or maybe 18/44], even if it also includes size 6/32, which is kind of misleading to some people.)
Nice to meet you, too! Vancouver is an amazing and gorgeous place.
(Moderator, could you please combine this thread with the other two Petites threads of the exact same title so I don't have to move this post to the more active thread? Thanks so much!
There's also a thread of the same title in the Plus section, but perhaps it needs to stay there, not sure.)

I think it depends on how "novice" you are. I found Petite Plus a good place to start. The Shapely Shirt looks better if you make it a size smaller than what the chart recommends and use a stretch woven. The nice thing about Petite Plus is that they are drafted for a D cup bust and a short waist, so you get the experience of sewing new garments without having to learn to do alterations also. If, however, you have already made a few garments and know how to make a regular pattern into petite or know how to do a Full Bust Adjustment, then jump into Simplicity, Butterick, McCall's or Vogue.

Take a look at Jalie and at the Simplicity line. There are lots of cute young designs, and also Burda. Burda patterns have many cute styles. You can see Jalie and Burda here on PR at the Shop Patterns tab without buying them. So have fun!

From what others have said, the nasty message came from Fitting Woes, NOT Misc Hot Topics or the Civility thread.
