Several family members hit this week... (Moderated by Deepika, EleanorSews)

There have been many posts here about job losses... it just isn't ending here in Michigan.
This week alone one brother was given a 20% paycut and 60 days notice that they will be closing, one brother was laid off (single dad with three kids) and the other brother and wife were told that if a buyer isn't found for their company (it was supposed to be purchased by GM per an agreement forged a year ago but is not possible now due to the plight GM finds themselves in) in very short order, they will close the doors. Chapter 11 is in the works but might not complete in time to save them. In the mean time, they have one week off per month without pay but don't know if they will even make it through June.
My husband's company will have 6 weeks of additional downtime (also related to GM) and he will have additional time off without pay. Two-hundred employees will be released in June with more going by year-end. The site which once had 8 manufacturing plants will be down to 1 by the end of the year.
We have friends that have been out of work for a year and are about to lose their home.
I am feeling so sad and worried for the future of my family and the families of those who are in a similar position. There are just so many people out of work... and more to come, at least here in Michigan.

Steffie, You have my prayers. I grew up in Michigan and I still have family there so I know what you are talking about. It is so sad to see so many people hurting.

So sorry to hear about the job problems.
It's hard to believe now that at one time the auto makers ran three shifts.

It's hard to imagine how this is going to affect Michigan and its people (not to mention the trickle down to the rest of us).

Lots and lots of bad news for those of us right here in the heart of what used to be the automotive capital of the world. It's like a house of cards falling down on us.
It will effect the nation, of course, but we're the closest to the epicenter and it's getting REAL ugly.
