feel lost sometimes (Moderated by Deepika)
Posted on: 6/2/09 6:52 AM ET
I am not a newbie, but until now I had a very limited connection, so I couldnt' read the boards much. But now that has changed and I am trying to get more involved. But I am having some trouble figuring out how to read the threads that interest me. On most other forums I am, you can mark threads as read and then when you come next time, it will jump right to the unread/new messages in the thread. On PR it seems like I always have to search forever trying to figure out how far I have read a thread and what the new posts are. Even when I subscribe to a thread, it always just leads me to the first post in a thread.
Am I missing something?
Is there a trick to reading the forums? =)
Thank you.

I would like to know how others navigate the message boards as well. For a while I was visiting the boards several times a day and would click on "unread posts since last visit". That worked for me; I felt like I didn't miss anything. But if I get busy and can't visit PR for a few days, I'm lost. I love this site and feel like I might have missed something I would have liked. I guess it's just there are so many active participants(unlike some boards), which is great, that it is hard to keep up with all the posts?

I first check 'replies on my topics' to see if there have been any...um...replies on my topic. =)
After that, I check 'unread posts since last visit' and if any interest me, I click on them and catch up.
Now that I am a board moderator, I make special trips to my assigned topics to see if I missed anything not viewed after checking the unread posts.

I read the feed on Google Reader. It shows you the original post and the number of replies is at the bottom with the tech details.
In Google Reader, you can mark a particular post as unread, star it, share with comments (for other GR users) or email it to someone who will get the body of the first post with the header as link.

If I recall correctly (it's been a loooong time since I've been active on these boards) Deepika builds everything on the forums herself, she doesn't use a pre-built template or software or anything. There is a button for "Track this Topic" at the top of the page, and also one labeled "Topic Tracker." To be perfectly honest I've never used them before but am going to check them out, 'cause I like being able to keep track of things like you've described too. :)
ETA: Topic tracking is a FoPR-only thing. Looks like I'll just stick to my typical method of browsing at random until I decide to pony up again.

Can you give more details on how to work with Google Reader?

Up on the right you can click on TRACK THIS TOPIC. Then you get a daily email telling you and linking you to topics that interest you. As you go to them of course you can read other topics - new ones, etc. as well! I use the Topic Tracker all the time! In fact, I am going to add this thread to my it!

I simply check the main menu and the menu for sections that interest me like: pattern & notions; fabrics; sewing machines; style; misc; and a few others.

I've always just clicked on Active Topics (w/o Misc). I prefer the way things are laid out with Active Topics. Some days I'm behind and I don't see everything, but if I were to try to read all that I miss here, I'd never get anything else done. I usually only go back 2-3 pages if I haven't kept up. But it's very easy to see the dates of last posts so you can go back as far as you want.
I'll click on Misc separately when I want to look through that area.

I also most often use the "Active Topics" or perhaps the "Active Topics w/ Misc" link at the top of the page. That brings up recently posted to threads. And then I click on the last page of the thread, and go back a page (or more, depending) until I see a post I have previously read.
I'm not aware of any way to jump directly to the last place you were in a thread.
