not working right (Moderated by Sharon1952)

I've had my Rowenta Effective iron for about 3 years now, and have loved ironing with it. Lately it's been acting up, where I can have it on high heat and nothing happens. I tried to troubleshoot it on their website, but still nothing. I already paid $60 for it (granted, that was 3 years ago) but I guess I was under the impression that irons should last quite a while. I should mention that when it does decide to heat up, it works fine for a little while. Nothing wrong with the steam or water, just the heat. Anyone else had this particular problem?

Well, I have a Rowenta also. Only have had it
for about 8 months. It's the top of line. And it doesn't
work at all. So to say the least I'm not a happy person
I had another Rowenta for about 8 years nothing wrong
with it. Just finally worn out

I'm on my 3rd Rowenta in just under 3 years, and the only reason I got a 3rd was because I had a gift certificate at a store and ended up getting a $60 iron for $25... I had the Professional, which popped and burned out, and couldn't be repaired for under $150 (ie: totalled!), and another model, cost around $100 but don't remember what model. I'll never get another one. Ever. Unless it's practically free (like #3).

I had a Rowenta, it lasted about 6 months. I still had the reciept and the box, so I took it back. Got a shark, lasted less than 6 months. I now have a black and decker. Lesson learned? Always keep the reciept and the box on irons!

I've been very disappointed with Rowenta irons. After about a year, mine began to spit. Then something went wrong with the thermostat and it would had only two temperature settings - "off" and "scorch". I'm finished with Rowenta.

My first Rowenta was a gem and when it finally wore out I purchased another with no hesitation. Lasted less than a year - problems with the temp and spitting. Purchased a cheap Black and Decker - loved it but dropped it one too many times. Found a top of the line Rowenta at a fabulous price, but after nine months it's becoming tempermental. I'm back to Black and Decker.

I'm having the same problem! My first Rowenta lasted for years. Then I dropped it. Bought the current one & it is horrible. Got a cheap retro Black & Decker. It's okay, but the Rowenta's steam sooooo well when they work. I am constantly in search of the perfect iron. I don't think I'll find it.

What is it with steam irons?
My conclusion is the auto shut off constantly turning the iron off finally blows the thermostat fuse (not the technical term). Repair service does not replace a fuse, but the entire wiring harness so they can charge more for the repair.
I had a Norelco that lasted for many years.
Replaced it with a Black & Decker - 1 year and then RIP.
I now have a Rowenta. If it craps out I'll bring out the Proctor-Silex cordless that is very old, but still works - just cools down too quickly.

It is sad to hear about Rowenta's decline in quality. A few months ago my Rowenta stopped heating. I am so disappointed cause I LOVED that iron which produced a lot of steam, but I did have it for 17 years. RIP. I bought a Black and Decker for $14 to "tide me over", and, surprisingly, I have been quite happy with the amount of steam it produces. It is lacking a "burst of steam", but for the money, I can't complain.
As to the lack of heating, I read somewhere, years ago, that that could be caused by 3 different things, one of which was that the heating element just simply stops working. I forgot what the other two were, but, to fix, I'm guessing more than the amount you paid for it.
What is it with irons made in the past few years??? I would expect at least ten years of service from a Rowenta, but I've been reading a ton of complaints about this brand. It's too bad.

I think the manufacturers don't care. In today's world, they probably don't sell enough of them anymore. One of my sisters irons maybe once a year (tablecloths). We who sew use our irons more than anyone else. JMO
