thrift store trend? (Moderated by Sharon1952, EleanorSews)

I was at my favorite thrift store today, and while DH looked at tools, I had fun looking at all the (overpriced) sewing machines. I hold out hope of stumbling across a vintage Bernina 730 or other treasure some day.
Every one, from the Nelco to the nice-looking Kenmore to the tried and true Singer 15-91 portable, was a vertical bobbin machine. And every one was missing its bobbin case, even the one with a whole bunch of bobbins, feet, etc. stashed in its case.
Good grief, is this a trend? What on earth can you do with bobbin cases?
Yes, I know some bobbin cases are valuable. But not all of them are.
The machines are rendered close to worthless for anyone but a collector or resourceful sewer without this key part. I am saddened by this trend.

The stores keep those parts in a different location--usually up behind the desk because people DO steal those especially the ones on the 221 featherweights, 301's, etc. If you ask up front, they'll tell you they have the parts there. It is a common practice in my area also. I remember how relieved I was to find this out when I bemoaned finding a great machine I wanted that had no accessories. They'll bag those up and hide them too. So don't let one get away until you ask a clerk!

Thanks for this answer! I feel better knowing that the stores are thinking ahead -- and that the machines are at least sold with this key part.
