Do I really need one? I tried using my big ole clunky iron but I can get it to stick.

Can you recommend a good one, Or is there a Trick to folding over the fusible to stick to the fabric other than ironing?

I don't get what you mean "folding over the fusible to stick to the fabric." Are you doing fusible applique or using fusible web to turn applique pieces? Are you sure that you are removing the backing on the fusible web before you iron it onto the fabric?

I take the fusible turn it under side to the back after I but out the shape ,and fold under with a iron then sew around the edges.

Well, there are a couple of things you can do. As I understand it, your applique piece has the fusible exposed so that you can iron on the applique before you stitch around the outside.

Well, you can get a silicone mat thing that covers the applique to keep it from sticking to your iron. Check this out at your local quilting store. Or you can also get a repositionable glue stick to hold the applique in place until you iron it.

I use a Black and Decker travel iron for applique because it is small and narrow enough to work with small applique pieces. I don't like the mini irons because they don't always produce enough heat to make a permanent bond. For an adhesive, I like Steam-A-Seam 2, which is a nice temporary adhesive until it is permanently bonded with an iron.

I've only used the 1/4" type on the roll for garment projects, and have had no problem.

I recently did a big applique project with S-A-S2 and had to keep cleaning the gummy stuff off my needle. Is that normal?

I like "Lite" Steam a Seam for that very reason. I do really like that this stuff sticks and is repositionable on applique projects.

It does gum but I also rubbed sewer's aid on the needle and that helped... I clean it less often.

To add... I am currently doing a wall quilt using Sharon Schamber's turned edge machine applique using washable Elmer's School glue. I like the results of the method so far but it is a labor intensive technique. I am currently testing a stabilizer called Stable Stuff along with this glue method. I haven't started sewing the blocks yet as I'm fiddling with the tension on my machine but as soon as I get that sorted I'll report back.
