I lost my job as a subcontract administrator in February (that's not the funny part, I promise!) so I've been doing a lot of sewing. I was in Joann's and mentioned to the girl at the cut counter that I should just get a job there since I spent so much time there. She said they were hiring and now I'm working there for the holidays.
I've sewn since I was 4 and have a degree in apparel and merchandising so I have a pretty good grasp of fabric.
The other night I was working and I had a girl come up to me and ask if we had spools of tole. I wasn't sure if I heard her right so I asked her to repeat what she said. She said the same thing again and I asked her to explain to me what she was looking for. She said, you know, that stuff that ballerina tutus are made of. I said, oh you mean tulle!
I figured we could all use a giggle, the closer it gets to Christmas and the more stressed out we get.

Oh, that's funny--and kind of sad, too. You should try out the word "tricot" and see what response you get. Probably the same one I got when I asked the maidens at the local fabric store.

Actually, the way Americans say "tulle" is pretty amusing to me. The way we pronounce it, it cannot be confused with "tool".
My partner and I were watching the US Project Runway once, when a designer was running around saying, "Where's my tulle?". I realised whey they were looking for, but my partner didn't. He was apparently quite puzzled, but I didn't realise until he eventually asked me, "What sort of tool have they lost?"

Well, darlin', Australians routinely butcher fabric names.
If I have another woman talk to me about voyle (voile), I think I might strangle her. Another is toyle (toile). I once had a woman talk to me very urgently about her "Applike" project. Even when I responded to her queries, politely pronouncing Applique the way the gods intended, she stuck to saying "Applike". And I'm really very sorry, but Australians murder "Tulle" as well. We all do. The French say it Tyoo-lah.

OK, now I'm curious. How do Australians pronounce tulle?
I found this on the french pronunciation of the word. (just hit the little arrow) Now I'm not sure how to say it. In the correct french fashion or so that the folks at the fabric store will actually know what I'm talking about.

Tulle
------
"Some people grow up in a house. I grew up at The Pond, where we swam, fished, caught tadpoles, went ice skating, played baseball, and hung out with friends. The Pond is home."

Another funny story: My local JoAnn's recently rearranged all of their stock. I was in a hurry to find what I was looking for, so I asked the clerk where I could find the muslins. The girl appeared shocked and said, "How would I know where those people are?!"

This unfortunately is a common error.
