Not buttons because I heavily interface/stabilize the waistband and can't deal with all the bulk at the end to ensure a nice buttonhole.
I usually use the wide hooks.
If I make a band that is the width of the seam allowance I might just use snaps.

Here's another vote for wide hooks.

I'd say you will probably get a vote for each.
My favourite is snaps as they give the flattest finish, meaning the closure can't be seen under my knit tops because it sits so flat. Much flatter than trouser hooks, which are my least favourite. Snaps are also the easiest to do and undo for toilet stops. I use the larger Snap Source snaps (size 20/24) which has the longer prongs, although I do like a slightly wider waistband. On a narrow waistband you could use the smaller sizes.

pant or skirt hooks. When I made clothes for family and especially smaller children hooks are easier for them to use.

I have used both buttons and hooks for trousers made for me and DH. I prefer the wide hooks out of the two. I also have the snaps kits but haven't used them on pants yet.

Belinda,
Do you have a gizmo to attach the snaps or do you hammer them in? Is it worth buying one?

I'm not Belinda, but I do have the Snaps gizmo. You hammer them in, but there is a device that holds the snaps in place so that you can hammer them properly. If you want to use snaps I think it is worthwhile to buy it because their snaps work so much better than other brands.

The snaps I use are the sew-on kind.
