Also, does it need to be preshrunk ? (Moderated by Deepika, Sharon1952)

I have purchased a real nice tweed from Manhattan fabrics to make a jacket out of. The fabric content is 55% cotton, 28% acrylic, 11% nylon, 6% rayon. What washing and drying method would you recommend? Is it absolutely necessary to preshrink? I usually do but sometimes it takes out the crispness of the fabric.

I'd dry clean it because of the drape; especially if you plan to make a jacket out of it. The cotton might fluff the fabric up too much. Other than that, a hand wash in cold water/line dry would work

Steam shrink it, or toss in a dryer with wet (but not dripping) white towels on high for 10-15 minutes, or have a dry-cleaner steam shrink it for you.
Yes yes yes you need to pre-shrink it. Otherwise, it will shrink as you press the garment during assembly, and upon dry-cleaning. Unless you only want to wear it until it needs cleaning.
Coz guaranteed, it will shrink afterwards if you don't pre-shrink it first. And that would be a lot of wasted time, money & effort.

Take a 6 inch square, serge the edges and toss in the laundry. You will see what happens and if things go south, the fabric will not be destroyed.

So I cut a small piece of this fabric, threw it in the washer with a batch of clothes on warm water and dried it on medium heat in the dryer. It came out a bit wrinklie and had to be ironed. When I compared the after size to the original size it looks like it shrank about a little over 1/8 inch all around. Preshrinking the fabric swatch also showed how much it will wrinkle if washed and I don't think I want to have to iron a jacket each time. So I will probably dry clean it when needed.
So now I am wondering if I preshrink the fabric by washing it in cold water and line drying it, will that do the job? To take it to the cleaners would take more time and money that I do not have.
What do others suggest?
