and of course everything needs to be labeled.... I figured this will be a good time to really learn my QC-1000 and its alphabet & decorative stitches...
Im going to go buy white t-shorts & briefs today ( he mostly has boxers and colored undershirts which would be hard to label)...oh yeah and white socks as well...
any hints or suggestions on decorative stitching... His name is only 5 letters long... Im wondering how much thread I will actually need/use??

If it were me, I'd get some iron-on names...either the type you can print yourself on an inkjet printer at home, or flock names by mail order (iron on, and being slightly raised, they show up well...plus, you can order them in pale colors that show up on black or dark colors well).

well of course that would be easier/quicker...but Im not necessarily looking for easy... the point it I have a brand new machine I need to familiarize myself with and think this would be a perfect opportunity
not to mention that at the cost of ink for inkjet, sewing initials or his name would be least expensive

Sorry can't help with the machine, but as a M of 2 who both spend many years at summer camp, the first year I did the sewn in label/time consuming approach (this was before my machine could sew letters).
I found that
(1) never send anything to camp that you care about...it will/may likely get lost or so soiled/torn that you want to toss it...that is why they go though, to play and romp and all.
(2) they usually only wore the top few layers of clothes from their trunks...the bottom layers always came back still folded like I placed them originally (when they were older they pcked their own trunks).
(3) after year one, I found a black sharpie marker written on pre-existing labels or in unobtrusive places did the easiest and best job of labeling.
JM2C, good luck, summer camp can be a great growing and learning experience for kids and parents!

my son is much less than close to being organized and I do understand not to expect anything back...which is why Im going to buy some inexpensive tighty-whities...
its really not about the time, I figured I could kill 2 birds with 1 stone ( learn my machine & label my son's belongings)

I have always dreamed of embellishing my kids names into their clothes.
Here are some things I would test first, especially if said child is going to be away from quick fixes for the entire two weeks.
The embroidery might weaken the fabric of the underwear, making a hole. This is particulary a problem on thin, cheap jersey.
The embroidery or stabilizer might be scratchy and bother the child, or even worse cause an actual wound. (ask me how I know... labels, embroidery, seams, I have seen it all cause ugly scratches, especially on a child who doesn't like to complain.)

When my DD started daycare, they told me to be sure to label EVERYTHING she wore. I bought a bunch of iron-labels, and went to town.
After the first day, the daycare teacher said, "Wow! You must be so organized and energetic to iron these into everything. I just use a Sharpie marker!"
Gosh, I wished I'd thought of that first. By far the easiest way to get the name on.

While I fully understand your desire to use your machine, I personally would use the sharpie or iron on labels.
My son is in a private school with uniforms. On the white uniform shirts I cannot use a sharpie, I have to use the iron on labels, but I stitch them in as well as ironing them as I find the glue does not stick forever.
I do not know the age of your son, but if he is anything like my sons he would not want his clothes to stand out from other kids. Neither of my sons would wear anything I had embroidered their names onto where they would be visible. However they may not mind a lightening bolt or other distinctive symbol where others could see it.

my son wont mind his things labeled with stitching... For what it's worth I have 5 children and plan to sewing the names into all 3 boys clothes... will end the fight of who's undies are these
I dont know if its just me but I find it ironic that on a message board dedicated folks are trying to talk me out of sewing...I understand the time & convenience factor but thats a very very small part of my decision....
as Ive stated earlier, more than anything I really want to use this as an opportunity to learn the embroidery function of my new sewing machine

Not ironic, but the voice of experience.Allthree of my kids went to sleep away. Its lots of clothes to label. I had a stamp made at the starionery store and got a regular black stamp pad and a silver one and label everything, both lights and darks.
save the embroidery for his sheets and towels. If a whole bunch of sewing fanatics are telling you not to bother sewing...I would listen to that wisdom.
