If you'd like to share your opinion, please help me. I am making a sleeveless sheath, M5753, in an off-white pea de soie to wear under an orange jacket. I have decided to add orange topstitching to the neckline to tie the two pieces together--and because I have recently become addicted to topstitching. I cannot stop myself no matter what. Here's the question: Can I also topstitch the darts in the bodice and skirt in the same orange thread, or is that just bizarre? I have seen darts topstitched in the same color as the fabric, but does it work with a contrasting thread? Ordinarily, I would just try it, knowing I could rip it out if it is disgusting. However, pea de soie prohibits any ripping out of stitches whatsoever! I would really appreciate your opinion.

Try a dart and some orange topstitching on a scrap and see how you like it. As far as being off the wall- who cares!

One (wo)man's "off the wall" is another (wo)man's avant garde style!!!

I think the look would be super-stylish. It would combine style AND the current trend of the DIY look (not meaning that your look would homemade as much as *handcrafted* and "one-off").

I say go for it!! And post pics!!!!

I think that would look really nice - the only exception being if it didn't match the lines of the jacket. For example - if the jacket is a swing style and ends at the waist and the top stitching extends into the skirt and creates a strange visual. So, I think it might depend on the style of the jacket.

I was snoop shopping yesterday at the mall and saw some outside darts. I hadn't seen them before.

So I say go for it in orange.

What I saw was a jacket, and the dart was on the outside, but then serged off and top-stitched down. I didn't care for it myself, but it was different.

Hey fattyboomboom,

Check out this item from Burda WOF. The darts are topstitched with a contrasting thread. I think it looks rather sharp.

Wow! That is sharp. I like everything about that jacket!

I ended up deciding against the the orange darts because I topstitched at the neckline, waistline, and hemline. That was enough for me.

Patty, I made that jacket but not that "version" - as I recall the dart is not just topstitched but actually has a whole piece, like a welt or piping, that is then topstitched.

Fattyboomboom, if you like topstitching you'd LOVE that jacket! The version I made had so much topstitching I actually left off one row on the lapels!

Hey Pinkytoo!
Glad to hear you made the jacket. I stumbled on that pattern and through various web groups was able to track down a copy of that issue from June, 2007 just for that jacket pattern. Do you have a pic of yours you could share??

I love the look with the topstitching on that. It will be worth the time.

Thanks.
