anyone else disappointed? (Moderated by Deepika, EleanorSews)
Posted on: 4/12/10 7:50 PM ET
I often buy Threads off the rack, and although I am rarely interested in all of it, this time it left me flat. This is the recent one with the extensive article on seams. Except for a few good reader tips, there wasn't much that I found very inspiring. A disappointment, since I can usually tuck into the new magazine with a lot of pleasure! Anyone else? or, can someone offer a different perspective that might make me rethink my first reaction?

I liked the color article. After getting my sewing skills to the point where my clothes don't look homemade- I still suffer from the lack of a cohesive idea about color. I devour every book and article I can on that subject.
I found the seam article interesting. I enjoyed Kenneth's article on the bodice.
Sometimes I put magazines away and pull them out over the summer and find that totally different articles entice me to try something new.
Can't say as I convinced you- perhaps someone else will add to the discussion.

Only this: Is there another sewing magazine of this type or caliber in the US?

I loved the seams article, too!! And Kenneth King is ALWAYS awesome.
I think it might be a matter of whim, though. Yannow? The mood or "place" you're at when you read an article. I know that I'd not have been as excited about the seams article months ago.
As for color, pick up a Pantone Color book (not the chips or the "Guidebook" ~ every so often, Pantone puts out an actual book on using color (usually including color trends) and how to use it *effectively* and (what I always found interesting) what the colors mean, what emotions they induce, etc.
Just overall, really good series on color ~ and what it can do for YOU.

The closest would prolly be Sew News. But Sew News is *definitely* geared towards the home sewist and "quickie" fashions, rather than the more detailed, more upscale, more professional-looking garments.
Though, SN often does have good, basic articles on fitting. It usually carries more articles on fitting than, IMO, Threads.
But as re construction, detailing, methods for a pro-finish, it's Threads or nothing. :/
However, if you want quilting, there's only a gazillion magazines out there for it. But garment-sewing? Two. That's it. :(
Now, there's a new magazine I saw yesterday at my bookstore called "Flair." It seems to be wearable art + embroidery ~ but I can't be more detailed since I was shopping with DS and he has NO patience for the sewing mags section (and was doing his best to harass me into leaving for dinner).

Not every batter hits a home run when at bat, and not every sermon is life-changing.
This issue didn't wind my watch .... I know because it has sat on the end table since it arrived, but that's okay. If I get one good piece of information (or one good advertisement-LOL) out of the magazine, I'm happy. I have no doubt there was good meat & potatoes in it for someone.

I loved the seams article and haven't looked too carefully at the rest. But, like others, I often find that an article that didn't interest me is exactly what I want to read much later. I would be desolate if Threads didn't exist. In recent years, the Vogue Patterns magazine has had good quality articles too and less quicky oriented than Sew News.

As someone who has only recently re-entered the wonder-filled world of fashion sewing (after a 20 plus year absence), this is my very first copy of Threads.
And I LOVE it! Possibly because nothing like this existed way back when, so it's all new and fresh to me. The seams article was interesting, the fitting article was (and will be, I'm sure) very helpful, and as someone who works with color a lot, I'm always interested in others' takes on color.
So if this one is lacking for some of you, I can't wait to see more!

Thanks for all the replies...... I realized that I often feel drunk with pleasure reading Threads, and this time that delicious feeling wasn't there, so that is what I am missing. I did like the colors article, and of course there is next month to look forward to!
