Hi folks,

I just finished the lace class here, and I have an idea for a project. I have a peach silk georgette that I want to make a jacket and shell out of. I plan on covering the shell with a guipure lace.

So, I was looking for a fluid-fabric jacket pattern that would also show off some of the lace. What are your thoughts on this jacket shape for me: Burda Jacket. I would replace the bow with a single button.

Here's a pic that is pretty representative of my shape. I'm worried about the shape because I don't have much of a waist.

Thanks for any thoughts!

I normally lurk, but just recently asked a sewing buddy about a very similar style and what she pointed out to me was one's eye would be drawn to the opening of the jacket below the closure, especially with my larger tummy. I LOVE the jacket style. I just don't know that it would work for me. Good luck!

I would say wear something darker underneath, so it disguises your tummy. I would also drop the curve down a little. I have a tummy too and these things I'd do.

This would work as long as it's not too long, high hip is probably the best bet.

I agree with those ideas, and also think that at the toile stage it would be worth seeing if a small amount of shoulder padding to define the line would help. The dangly ends of the bow do provide a vertical, so maybe try it out before settling on a button. If there's a dark colour dress to go with it, the neck edge could be played up. eg maybe have the lace extending beyond the underneath fabric and allow it to shape the neckline.

I think the jacket could look very nice on you, and I would keep the bow.

I agree that it will look very nice. Good luck.

Any chance you can buy some really cheap lace fabric to try out the idea and see what you think?

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. Here's a quick and dirty muslin of the front and back Muslin. Sorry it's such a yucky picture, but 1) it's a mirror shot and 2) I've been weeding outside At least it gives the general shape. I obviously need to add some width so it closes easily, but the shape isn't as bad as I thought it would be.

I don't know if I made myself clear in the original post, but I was planning on putting the lace on the shell to go under the jacket. Here's a photo of the fabric. I was thinking of having the peach and lace for the shell and just the peach for the jacket.

The fabric is beautiful. I think that it will look great with your coloring. Go for it!
