I am thinking about getting a Droid phone from Verizon. I am new to this type of technology and wondered if anyone had any info on sites for free downloads for Apps for this type of phone.
Thanks for any help.

I have the Droid Eris and I've downloaded all my apps from the app marketplace (comes on the phone). I've never heard of downloading apps from websites but there are plenty of free apps on the marketplace. All the ones I have were free. The phone also comes with a lot of stuff on it already. I read an article a while ago talking about apps they liked for the Droid phones, but I can't remember where I read it, and I don't have it saved. But I bet if you google 'best droid apps' or something you'll get a lot of results.

My Droid should arrive in the next couple days. I'm moving from no texting directly into a smart phone. I was waiting until the Kindle App was available on the Droid - its been announced but isn't available yet. And I didn't want an IPhone because it doesn't have good coverage where my parents live.

So the app I'm most excited about it the Kindle App. I'll be able to read my Kindle books (I already have a Kindle) on my droid. And Amazon syncs it up so it keeps track of where I am in the book so I can switch back and forth.

I'm not looking forward to paying a lot more every month, but decided it was a luxury I could afford.

there is a kindle-like app that Ive heard lots of good things about....

it's called Aldiko

I have both the Moto-Droid & the Droid Incredible ( Moto droid on DH's soon to be discontinued account).... I havent had time to play with the incredible but the Droid OS is nice & I have had ZERO complaints about my phone and/or service...

very much unlike when I had an iphone.... the Iphone in itself was wonderful.... the service, or the lack thereof I should say, made the phone useless as a smart device.... If Verizon had the iPhone on their network, Id be in hog heaven.....

though many say the Droid is even better than the iPhone...I certainly dont miss my iPhone as much as I thought I would...

I've got an iPhone so I can't vouch for the Android version, but my favourite ever GPS-tracking running app, RunKeeper has a free version for Android. I used to use Nike+ but I found this is more accurate plus you et a map at the end in addition to all the mileage/speed audio cues you got with Nike+.

Thanks for the replies. Just wondering what some of your favorite droid apps are.

Best App for Running
My Tracks
Hardcore runners no longer need to shell out hundreds of dollars for an expensive GPS watch. If you have a GPS-enabled Android phone, you can get most of the same features for free with Google's My Tracks. My Tracks records and displays your distance, duration, elevation, pace, and other information in real time while you run (or ride, or hike). Even better, it integrates with Google Docs and Google Maps to record all of your running data so you can show off to your friends.

Best Twitter App
Seesmic
If you use the desktop or web version of Seesmic, you'll love this app. It's clean and very intuitive to use, and packs a whole lot of features into a tiny little app. You can use your Bit.ly username and API key, making it easy to track your tweeted short URLs and resulting clicks. You can also set all sorts of notifications to alert you of various updates and messages.

Best App for Sending Email
K9 Email
K-9 Mail is an excellent free and open source email client that can handle IMAP, POP, WebDav, and some not-so-finicky exchange servers. This app is an improved and more full-featured version of the Mail app that comes with your Android phone. You have control over how often you poll for messages and the number of messages to display. Even if your phone is not your primary email client, you may want to use a client like this to check mail when you are between places.

Best App for Note Taking
Evernote
The notes that you take with the Evernote app can be accessed from both your Android device and your computer. You can quickly add a text note, audio note, photo snapshot, or file upload to your library from any of your devices. One particularly cool feature is Notes Nearby, which lets you find notes that were written near your current GPS location. I used this at a recent wine tasting event, and when I went back to the liquor store a few weeks later, I found my notes and exactly what I was looking for.

Best Electronic Book Reader
Aldiko
Who needs another expensive device dedicated to just reading books when you already have your Android phone with you? Aldiko gets mobile book reading right, with an eye-pleasing, customizable format (by font, color, margins, etc.). You can curl up with your favorite books or take them on the go. Aldiko will read any ePub file, which you can import yourself or download through Aldiko's online catalog. (Many O'Reilly Media titles are available in ePub format from http://www.oreilly.com)

Best Travel-Booking App
Kayak
Kayak.com is one of the largest travel search sites, and this app brings its flight, hotel, car rental, and other trip searches to your Android phone in a clean, easy-to-navigate interface. Like the website it integrates with, the Kayak app sifts through the data from hundreds of different travel sites, allowing you to compare options, prices, and more before sending you off to book your trip in whatever manner you want, whether it's at the airline site, the hotel, a car rental company, or a travel agent.

Evernote is awesome. I have it on my iPod Touch, but I know they have a droid app. They have a podcast and a blog if you need ideas about how to use it. It, in fact syncs web to phone to PC to Mac. It recognizes handwriting, sorts and searches, etc. Much more than I can list here. I can't be without it.

This is the most enabling post that has spoken to me.
DH and I have a date to go look at, and most likely get, Droids today. My current phone doesn't even have a camera. I don't know how to text, but I am ready to enter the new millennium. LOL Since I talked myself out of $pringing for the new Janome Horizon 7700 and Horn cabinet to match, I can afford the data package for this luxury. (DH's phone is a business expense, since most of his work is online. )
Verizon currently has a good price on the Motorola Droid.

LOL - I'm glad I could help. I enabled my husband so much that we took advantage of the 2 for 1 deal Verizon had going.

My droid came Monday and I'm trying to become familiar with it. I've sent an email and taken and sent a video. I tend to be very comfortable with new technology, but my main problem here seems to be my fat fingers as I try to use the tiny keyboard

I took my son dress shopping for graduation and was able to have easy entertainment for myself as I waited for him to try things on.
