We have hardwood floors w/one throw rug, a cat, and a toddler. Our apt is small and crowded so I hardly ever get my big I-bought-it-when-we-lived-in-a-ranch-house-in-Kansas vacuum because it's too heavy and too frustrating for our space.
If I'm going to keep up on dirt, I need something more immediate, accessible, handy. I'm tempted to put some $$ into something cordless that I can grab when I have 10 minutes to take a run at the hallway. Or a quick turn around the boy's room.
I already bought a Electrolux for $40 from a local mom. It's not worth that amount or anywhere NEAR the retail prince of $99. No suction at all. (but light and quiet with a great swivel head!)
Am I looking for something that doesn't exist?

I have a hoover freejet rechargeable broom type vac for my upstairs hardwood floors. I chose this because it stands upright even when not on its stand so you don't have to pick the handle off the floor every time you let go of it to move furniture. Its light and quick - you need to empty it pretty well every time but that is quick and easy.
its like this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Freejet-FJ120R2-Rechargeable-Cordless-Cleaner/dp/B002GKC3VG

I have a Eureka Quick Up in my kitchen and I gave each of my sons one when they moved into their first place. It has a beater bar brush you can engage or disengage, so it can be used on bare floors or carpet. You can also detach the entire working part from the long handle and you have a hand held(Great for steps). I love this vacuum because it's not a rechargable. I have gone through many of those over the years and they never had much power. This little vacuum has a cord and power! We have a cat and it does well with cat hair. Will even pick up pieces of lunch meat off the floor(yep, I know this for a fact) I bought mine at Wal-mart. They use to be yellow, but I think they are blue now. They can cost anywhere from $30-$40. I think the last one I bought at Wal-mart was about $35.00. The place I take my sewing machine for service sells them for about $49.00 They are great and even my sons remarked about how good it was to have it on hand, when they first moved into their homes(they bought their "big" vacuums later).

I've had this vacuum for about 3 years and I still like it. I have 2 dogs and I use it almost daily to keep up with the hair and dust bunnies. You get about 15 or 20 minutes on a charge, which works for me most of time.

I did have a problem with it after a few months of use. The suction seemed to get progressively worse until it wasn't working at all. My husband looked at it and realized the screen filter was clogged (it looked fine to me). It has 2 filters, one is a paper like material and the other is a fine soft screen. Now I clean the screen with a soft brush after each use and the vacuum works great.

You might want to check your Electrolux and see if that could be the problem with it's lack of suction before you give up on it.

I have the Hoover "Slider" that I use on my kitchen floor. I like it a lot. It was $39.95 with free shipping several years ago.

Here's a youtube demo.

I have a Hoover Platinum stick vac. Love it so much I bought 2 more (gift and for a 2nd house). A little pricey, but i got a great deal at Kohl's with one of those 30% off coupons and have now seen them at Costco.

Thank you, ladies.

I eventually made a list of what was important and made a decision from there. My husband accuses me of doing too much research and then suffering from decision-making paralysis. He's right!

Hoover Flair. I went with something with the longest cord, a brush I could turn on and off, and a swivel head (free shipping, too!) In the end, these were the things that I think will make a big difference in keeping my floors a little more presentable. I'll still have "big Bertha" in the closet for when I really clean. But, if I can get into the habit of running this across the floor, say, while the boy eats his lunch in the high chair, we won't be stepping on so many crushed Cheerios.

After a lot of reading, I came to believe, as you stated, cordless just isn't going pick up the dust bunnies _and_ the spilled cat food.

We'll see. It might sit right next to my Swifter--back in the depths of our 'icky' closet.

Thanks for your input!

Thanks to JTink for the recommendation for a Eureka Quick-Up. We were in Walmart the other day and bought one for $27.95. I'm amazed at how well it works compared to the Bissell we have right now! Thanks a bunch!
