Sorry, I truly do not know (Moderated by Deepika, EleanorSews)

I am sorry if this comes across as a really dumb question, but I truly do not know and could not find a consistent answer by Google.
Feel free to send me a private message if you do not want to post on the board.
I do know that it is Ramadan right now. My question is about a weekly Holy day such as Sunday for Christians or Sundown Friday to Sundown Saturday (I think) for Jews.
The reason for my question is I am applying for a job with a Muslim doctor and I do not want to jump to any conclusions as to why he only works a 1/2 day of Fridays. It could just be that he wants more time with his family. But I do not know if there is a religious reason.
I live in a small town that only has Christian places of worship and I have not had much first hand exposure to other faiths.
Thank you,

Cut'n'paste from a Muslim website found by Googling "Muslim Sabbath":
While Muslims do not celebrate the Sabbath like Jews or Christians, they do have a day of prayer that is a lot like many Christian church services. This day is Friday – in fact, the very word for Friday in Arabic comes from the name for the special prayer that is done only on that day. It’s also the day Muslims are expected to pray at mosque – all other days of the week Muslims may pray in private.
All men are required to attend Friday prayers; women can attend voluntarily. And men and women are separated once inside, praying in different areas. In some countries, Muslims go to mosque when the call to prayer is sounded from the nearest tower. The call is similar to church bells in Christianity, calling congregants to worship, although the call, itself, is a prayer.
In places where there is no call to prayer, the tradition of gathering on Friday is still observed. For Muslims these prayers are a powerful act of remembrance of Allah and an important part of community building.

In reply to Al Johnson
Thank you Al.
I did not think to use the search term Sabbath. I appreciate the time you put into this for me.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jumu%27ah
its calla Jumu'ah
Jumu'ah (Arabic: جمعة) (also known as jum'ah, Friday prayer, etc.) is a congregational prayer (salat) that Muslims hold every Friday, just after noon in lieu of dhuhr. It is mentioned in the Qur'an as:
O you who believe! when the call is made for prayer on Friday, then hasten to the remembrance of God and leave off business; that is better for you, if you know. (Qur'an 62:9)
And when the prayer is ended, then disperse in the land and seek of Allah's bounty, and remember Allah much, that ye may be successful. (Qur'an 62:10)
The jumu'ah prayer is half the dhuhr prayer, for convenience, preceded by a khutba (a sermon as a technical replacement of the two reduced raka'ahs of the ordinary dhuhr prayer), and followed by a communal prayer, led by the imam. In most cases the khaṭīb also serves as the imam. Attendance is strictly incumbent upon all adult males who are legal residents of the locality, females are also permitted to go to the Mosque to perform the Friday prayers, and have a section that is separated from men in which they pray with fellow Muslim women, though it is only obligatory on all Muslim males.[1]

I have an MA in Islamic Studies and want to add a few bits to this already useful discussion.
Friday (Community Gathering Day) is not a holy day in Islam. The only requirement for setting aside normal behavior is the time for the Community Worship itself, which is already described above. Islam only has two designated official Holy periods, which are the Eids in Shawwal and Dhu'l Hajj.
There is, however, a very strong cultural practice to close businesses, schools, etc. on Friday, and maybe Saturday. This is in no way a religious obligation, businesses etc. would be free to operate at any time other than the designated Community Worship. Cultures choose how to handle the time other than the Community Worship time.
If you'll notice, I translate Jum3a as "Community" and "Salat" as Worship, rather than use the more familiar but less accurate terms. This is to avoid using words such as "Sabbath" and "Prayer" which are derived from terms used from other religions - the Jewish concept of Sabbath is quite a different one from the Muslim Friday obligations described above, for example.
The Dr. you are working for may be closing on Friday for a different reason - he may just want to get out to his summer house more quickly, for example. If you are hired, you might get to know him and feel comfortable asking questions about his life, which might include asking where he goes on Friday afternoons.

Thank you Therisa.
I really appreciate the further clarification.
I think that whether or not I get this position, I need to educate myself a whole lot more on the major religions of our World.
One of my son's friends spent 3 or 4 weeks this summer at a remote Buddhist Temple in South Korea. He is going to get permission to come to our house this school year (he is a boarding student) on weekends. I should find out about his faith too.
