H & M fabrics, also known as Beinoni (various locations in the fabric district) is selling remnants for $1/yard.

you can find them in the district because they have the ugliest signage in the district ( badly spelled scribblings on lined notbookpaper taped int the windows)

But the fabric is terrific. I spent $11, my friend spent $38 just in remnants. There were some lovely knits and my ftiend got wonderful shimmery rayon blends, the kind with the metallic shiny face and the soft cottony side near your body. I got an ITY black and white floral,a dress for next summer, tons of brown ribbed knit and a lovely black lace. you can see photos of my haul on my blog www.sewnewyork.blogspot.com.

There were some lovely knit prints in colors that didn't work for me..a little too happy for me. We left lots of good stuff in the boxes for the rest of you.

Sounds fun! Enjoy that inexpensive awesome fabric for me! I'm a fabric fast but it would be hard if that were nearby!

Well, this is why I make nearly all of my clothes. it's cheaper to make than to buy RTW, even at Wally world.

Hi Sarah

I'm new to sewing and have been down to the fabric district
and it can be a job just looking around and going from one store to another trying to find what you want.

Can you suggest a good place to buy some nice quality denim or stretch denim for jeans ?

Also where I can buy some nice quality (Faux) soft suede or leather ? Will be used to make jeans so I don't want stiff fabric.

I'm not really interested in bargain cheap fabric and looking for
quality fabric.I don't mind paying for the quality fabric.

Thanks

If you need a place that is not quite so visually ovewhelming, i would go to rosen & chadick, across the street from parsons, on the second floor. The bolts of fabric won't assault you and their staff is really helpful. They have good quality fabric and they won't make you feel stupid because you are new to sewing.

New York elegant has lots of faux fur...I can't remember at the moment if they have faux leather. I always theink of them as tyhe texture store.

you may also want to try Paron.

B+J also has a great selection ( I never shops specifically for denim but some just came home with me) I did just come home with a remnant of beautiful denim from Touva next door ( almost) to paron. Maybe they have the rest of the bolt...it is a crazy, crazy store...the owners do try to do the thing I hate where no prices are on anything and they try to guilt you into buying fabric. you won't get that shouk- shopping experience at Rosen & chadick. It's straight business...tell them what you need, they will help you find it and charge you a price. Rosen & Chadick , New York Elegant and B+J are much more a first world shopping experience.

Rainer, I second Sarah's suggestions. B&J and Rosen & Chadick are great, but you will pay for the high quality and well-organized space. Paron's is a little more affordable and I've always found the people there very nice and helpful. They have a half price annex which requires a little digging through but I've even had the sales people help me to look for something in there if I was looking for something specific. I will add that Mood is always worth checking out. They've added to their denim selection recently and had some nice stretch denims when I was there last.

Will do and thanks again.

We should have a NYC Fabric district thread where we can post all the fab deals.

I'm sure a lot of online fabric stores get their fabric directly from NYC in addition to overseas..no ?

I know some do... Emma One Sock often has stuff that I also see in Mood and Elliott Berman. Ann at Gorgeous Fabrics must have some of the same suppliers as Kashi at Metro Textiles because I've seen some of the same stuff on her website and in his store.
