Redoing the sewing room (Moderated by Deepika, EleanorSews)
Posted on: 1/3/05 11:33 PM ET
What started with "let's just rip out the carpeting in the sewing/computer room" has evolved into a major overhaul. I figured that if we were moving stuff out of the room to get to the carpet we might as well go for it. So we have installed recessed lights, painted the walls and ceiling, and sanded the hardwood floor. We still need to finish sanding the floor, remove all the dust, and then stain and varnish the wood. And then we can move everything back in. We had a lot packed into the 12x10 foot bedroom!
We painted the walls a dark blue-purple, called Mysteria and the ceiling and closet doors are white. I probably would have gone for a lighter color but I let DH pick it out since I've made all the other color choices in the house, which he has pronounced "foo-foo-kitty"(??) I think he means they're a bit feminine. The color is very nice I think, despite being dark. I have a large peg-board that is painted white and I think I will leave it that color. I also have a fabric-covered board for pinning patterns and cut pieces to and I think I'll recover it - should I use a white fabric or something bolder? I don't use it for laying out quilt pieces, but I suppose I could.
Lighting is no longer a problem with the 6 recessed Halogen lights we put in. They were a pain to install - messy blown-in insulation was everywhere!
I'm looking forward to moving my sewing and crafting treasures back into the room. I can honestly say that although I have an awful lot of things, I really didn't see anything I wanted to part with except for a book or two. I did find some things I forgot I had.
I'll post links to pictures when I can.

Oooh, sounds wonderful - I can't wait to see your pics! I too will be ripping the carpet out of my sewing room shortly. This has led to a major reorganization and some purging. I'm also considering painting the walls blush or some other foo-foo color except inside the closet since I am NOT taking all that fabric out again!

I was able to leave the contents of the closet alone - thank goodness! We put a closet organizer in there a few years ago and thankfully I painted the walls before we put it in. The walls are not the same color as the rest of the room but I don't care because you can't see them anyway due to all the fabric and out of season clothing stuffed in there!
I think not having carpet is great for the sewing room. I can't tell you how many times I've had to search for pins in the carpet.

I *love* the color you chose, Lori. It's going to be so soft and elegant with white trim. Can't wait to see photos!

That color is great. I love color on walls.
You're inspiring me! I have to make some changes too. Then, when I get a new home PC I can put it in the sewing room, so I can watch DVD's, access PR, and listen to music in there.
All this coming far down the road - but I love hearing about others sewing room adventures. I still want to find time to roll my fabric like Leslie did.....
Good luck!

I can finally see the color - I'm headed out to Home Depot now so I think I'll check out a swatch in person. It's such a beautiful color! Plus all my cabinets are white, which would really look crisp and fresh. Here we go, another project....

What a beautiful color, Lori! Your room is going to be so gorgeous, when it's done.

Lori, what a fun project, and opportunity to really have things the way you want them. It'll make being in that room to sew even nicer.
If your fabric covered board hangs on the wall, and it doesn't always have things on it, maybe you could find a cool coordinating print fabric to recover it. Then it would look like 'art' hanging there. I'm imagining a big flower print, in shades to match your paint, with a light background.
This topic is inspiring!

Lori - That color is beautiful! I can't wait to see your room. And thank you for the link. I've been playing with colors in different rooms in various combinations for quite awhile now. It's so helpful to be able to see the finished combination before buying.

Ooooooh, wonderful color. I love paint. Growing up most of my homes were either on the military base or rentals so I saw a LOT of white walls. The one house we owned (which was the one we lived in the shortest, naturally!) still had white walls to 'preserve the resale value.' Personally I'd rather buy a home with a bit of color, but anyway, I digress.
Color is great. :)
Please post pictures when you're done!
