While making a pair of 3/4s yesterday, and trying to figure out where they should sit, then eyeballing them in the mirror, I thought it would be so much easier if there was a length guide say for shorts, 3/4s, and full length.
That said X" below the knee, X" above the ankle. etc
Does anyone know if there is a correct "guide" for where pants should sit?

Well, I don't know the answer to this one, but it might be the same one for skirts. There is a spot on your leg, either above or below the knee, that should be perfect for a skirt. This spot doesn't make your legs look fat, or overly long. For me, the spot is where my knee dips; meaning about 2" below my knee, and if I want it longer, it's a little below my calf. At my calf, my leg looks hugely fat and gives the impression that the rest of my leg is fat. I use this same spot for capris and anything longer, has to deal with my comfort level.

Maybe this can help...I'm not sure how to get the picture big enough for you to see without making it so big

If I recall correctly, it's in Helen Joseph Armstrong's "Patternmaking for Fasion Design." I knew I'd seen an illustration like that before, when I first read your post, but couldn't figure out where!
Thanks, goldilox! And thank you, Snuzal, for asking the question in the first place!

Wordnerd is right, it's from Helen Joseph-Armstong's Patternmaking for Fashion Design. I find it's a very good book to have

Taunton's Easy Guide to Pants has the same chart and it would be a hell of a lot cheaper than the Armstrong book which at last look was about $70 or so.

Wow, apparently what I've been calling capris for the last 10 years are pedal pushers! Who knew! (and here I thought the terms were interchangeable). ;)
