I have been asked to come up with some sewing kits/baskets for my two nieces (4th grade and 6th grade). What are some items that would be age appropriate to get them started on the path to the wonderful world of sewing?
Thanks

that's so cute...

my daughters have a little kit with a measuring tape, chalk, easy-grip scissors, a pin cushion, little pack of pins (you may/may not want these), big needles for doing easy handsewing, colourful thread ( I included embroidery thread for it's colourful nature and ability to be used in big needles), tracing paper, pencil and some fabric to inspire!

How about everything Jilly suggested but instead of a pin cushion already made up - something like this instead?

Jatman - that is a great idea.

I only used those red love heart thingys from Ikea that wrap around the wrist. Now you have given me inspiration. thank you :)

I'm glad you like that! I was hoping to find something on Etsy. The squirrel pin cushion is just too cute. They had other animals, too!

Singer makes a beginner's kit that you can buy at Joann's. You might also include a basic sewing book or a book with either one-yard or fat-quarter ideas. Or even a gift certificate to a sewing class because even if they have the tools, they might not know where to start or how to attack a project.

Jatman - you have opened up a whole new world to me - cutesy stuff that I never imagined. (would give you a hug - but my security system is blocking my java - boy am I computer challenged!!!).

Another thing my kids like is a glue stick, some of the simple dolls clothes are glued at the seam so we omit pins while sewing.

My daughters love little bits of trim (ric rac, pretty ribbon etc) too, it helps them to design. I love kids' creativeness.

Jilly - Right back at you! (I have no idea if I am Java Challenged or not - we'll see when I hit post!)

Mary - another idea might be to do some sort of sewing with buttons. When i was a kid I could play with my mom's jar of buttons forever. It would be cool to make a pillow and cover it with buttons or something of that nature. That way they could get some machine sewing practice and some hand sewing practice.

ETA - it worked! Who knew?
